In brief: Billy Horschel holds three-shot lead at BMW

Golf: Billy Horschel made a 32-foot birdie putt Saturday to close out a 7-under 63 and take a three-shot lead over Ryan Palmer into the final round of the BMW Championship at Cherry Hills Village, Colorado.

Horschel, who had a chance to win the Deutsche Bank Championship before chunking a 6-iron from the 18th fairway last Monday, birdied 14 and 15 to take the lead. His birdie on 18 left him at 13-under 197.

A few minutes later, Palmer answered with a 30-footer on 18 to draw within three.

U.S. Open champion Martin Kaymer shot a 64 to get within five, tied with Masters champion Bubba Watson (66) and one shot ahead of Rickie Fowler (66).

Second-round leader Sergio Garcia faded, shooting 72 to fall seven behind.

• Bradley, Mickelson withdraw: Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson both withdrew from the BMW Championship.

Bradley was unsure about whether he took a legal drop at the end of his opening round.

Mickelson shot 76 on Friday and was 14 shots out of the lead. He said his goal is to rest and prepare for the Ryder Cup on Sept. 26-28 in Scotland.

• Toledo, Faxon tied: Defending champion Esteban Toledo shot a 6-under 66 for a share of the second-round lead with Brad Faxon at 10-under in the Champions Tour’s Quebec Championship in Quebec City.

Loren Roberts was third at 8 under after a 69. Jay Haas, Scott Simpson, Wes Short Jr. and Duffy Waldorf were 7 under.

Rangers’ Darvish finished for season

MLB: Texas Rangers right-hander Yu Darvish won’t pitch again this year.

The three-time All-Star has not pitched since Aug. 9 because of elbow inflammation. He finishes 10-7 with a 3.06 ERA and 182 strikeouts in 22.

• Tanaka completes session: Masahiro Tanaka threw a 34-pitch bullpen session in the first mound action since Aug. 28. The New York Yankees pitcher hasn’t appeared in a game since July 8 because of a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

U.S. routs Mexico, will face Slovenia

Miscellany: Stephen Curry hit six 3-pointers and scored 20 points to help the U.S. ease to an 86-63 victory over Mexico in the round of 16 at the Basketball World Cup. Klay Thompson added 15 points at the Palau Sant Jordi Pavilion in Barcelona.

In the quarterfinals, the Americans will face Slovenia, which beat the Dominican Republic 71-61 in a thrilling back-and-forth contest.

France eliminated Croatia 69-64 in the other bracket played in Madrid will face Spain, which topped Senegal 89-56.

• Contador maintains lead: Ryder Hesjedal of Canada won a mountainous 14th stage of the Spanish Vuelta, while Alberto Contador held onto the red leader’s jersey and increased his overall lead to 42 seconds.

Hesjedal edged Oliver Zaugg in the final meters of the 125-mile ride from Santander to La Camperona.

• Hamilton takes pole: Lewis Hamilton broke Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg’s recent stranglehold on pole position by qualifying ahead of the championship leader at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, Italy.
