In brief: Andy Murray beats Novak Djokovic in Rogers Cup final
Tennis: Andy Murray beat top-ranked Novak Djokovic 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 on Sunday in the Rogers Cup in Toronto for his fourth tournament victory of the year and third title in the Canadian event.
The second-seeded Murray also won the tournament in 2009 and 2010. The Scot ended an eight-match losing streak against Djokovic since the 2013 Wimbledon final.
Djokovic, the champion in 2007, 2011 and 2012, lost for only the fourth time in 56 matches this year. The Serb failed in his bid to tie the ATP Tour record for consecutive Masters 1000 event titles at five.
Djokovic was playing his ninth straight final, a run that included championship victories over Murray this year in the Australian Open and Key Biscayne, Florida.
• Bencic defeats Halep to win Rogers Cup: Belinda Bencic won the women’s final in Toronto, following her upset of Serena Williams with a 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 3-0 victory over an ailing Simona Halep.
Halep was hampered by a left leg injury and heat exhaustion and stopped in the third set.
Bencic is an 18-year-old Swiss who is ranked 20th. She won for the second time on the WTA Tour.
Her win over the second-seeded Romanian capped a week of upsets. She beat four of the top five seeds, including the top-ranked Williams in the semifinals.
Canadian teen wins Portland Classic
Golf: Brooke Henderson won the Cambia Portland Classic in Portland by eight strokes to become the third-youngest champion in LPGA Tour history.
The Canadian closed with a 3-under 69 at Columbia Edgewater to finish at 21-under 267. Henderson’s age is 17 years, 11 months, 6 days.
Lydia Ko set the age record as an amateur in the 2012 Canadian Women’s Open at 15 years, 4 months, 2 days.
• O’Sullivan wins U.S. Women’s Amateur: Hannah O’Sullivan won the U.S. Women’s Amateur, beating Sierra Brooks 3 and 2 in the 36-hole final at Portland Golf Club in Portland.
O’Sullivan won the Symetra Tour’s Gateway Classic in February at 16 to become the youngest winner in the history of the professional circuit.
Danish Dynaformer wins at Woodbine
Horse Racing: Danish Dynaformer won the 125th running of the $500,000 Breeders’ Stakes in hot, muggy conditions, romping to a 7 3/4-length victory at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto.
Patrick Husbands rode his fourth Breeders’ Stakes winner to tie the record held by Sandy Hawley and Robin Platts.
• Irad Ortiz Jr. rides five winners at Saratoga: Irad Ortiz Jr. became the first jockey in nearly two years to ride five winners on a single program at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York.
It was the fourth career five-win day for Ortiz and first since Nov. 15, 2013.
U.S. women rout Costa Rica on tour
Miscellany: Christen Press scored three goals to power the United States to an 8-0 exhibition romp over Costa Rica in Pittsburgh in its first game since winning the Women’s World Cup in Canada last month.
The game marked the opening of a victory tour by the Americans and was played before a crowd of 44,028 at Heinz Field.
Goalkeeper Hope Solo and forward Abby Wambach entered in the second half.
• Mikulak grabs third straight U.S. gymnastics title: Sam Mikulak had little trouble picking up his third straight U.S. gymnastics title in Indianapolis, overcoming an early misstep on high bar to dominate a crowded field that will give the Americans a deep roster heading into the world championships in October.
The 22-year-old Mikulak’s spot was never in doubt as he became the first American since Paul Hamm in 2002-04 to win three consecutive national titles.
• Dalhausser, Ross win again at Manhattan Beach: Olympic gold medalist Phil Dalhausser and April Ross successfully defended their titles in the AVP Manhattan Beach (California) Open.
Dalhausser, a resident of Manhattan Beach, won his fifth Manhattan Beach Open title and helped partner Nick Lucena to his first. They beat Tri Bourne and John Hyden 21-19, 21-17 in the final.
Top-seeded Ross and Jennifer Fopma beat fifth-seeded Nicole Branagh and Jenny Kropp 21-15, 26-24 in the women’s final. For Ross, it was her 23rd AVP win and 10th victory in the last 11 AVP tournaments.
