Vandals elect 7 captains

Seven players will be Idaho Vandals football captains this fall.

After a team vote, four were chosen on defense and three on offense. Defensively, seniors Quinton Bradley and Broc Westlake are joined by juniors Tueni Lupeamanu and Russell Siavii. On offense, the top vote-earners were seniors Dallas Sandberg and Elijhaa Penny, and sophomore Matt Linehan.

Women’s soccer

Washington State ran its record to 3-0 with a 2-1 victory at Boise State (0-3). Nicolle Marlow scored her first collegiate goal in the 53rd minute, which proved to be the winner. Cara Wegner scored WSU’s other goal in the 17th.

• Karley Baggerly scored Gonzaga’s second goal of the match and assisted on the third as the Bulldogs (1-1-1) posted a 3-1 win over Cal State Bakersfield (1-1-1) in Spokane.

• Eastern Washington (2-1-1) was blanked by UC Davis 3-0 in a match in Portland. All three goals for the Aggies (3-1-0) came in the second half as they outshot the Eagles 13-4.

• CC Spokane scored a 1-0 victory over Everett in a NWAC Friendly played in Springfield, Oregon. Sarah Melvin scored in the 80th minute and Emily Busselman picked up the shutout.

• In another NWAC Friendly in Springfield, Clark blanked North Idaho 2-0. The Cardinals had a goal called back on a controversial offside call and narrowly missed a chance at another goal when Corinne Ariss put the ball just over the crossbar.

Men’s soccer

Gonzaga (1-1) picked up its first victory with a 1-0 win over host Seattle. Jake Kempf found Jakob Granlund with a long ball and Granlund put it into the back left corner of the net for the sixth goal of his career. Chris Lowrimore made four saves for the shutout.

• Jonathan Cortez had two goals and CC Spokane did all its scoring in the second half for a 5-1 victory over Southwestern Oregon in a NWAC Friendly played in Springfield, Oregon.

• In another NWAC Friendly in Springfield, Jorge Carmona and Anthony Barboza scored two minutes apart early in the first half and North Idaho beat Clark 3-1.

Volleyball

Wichita State (2-1) swept Idaho (0-3) 25-16, 25-22, 25-18 in Honolulu. DeVonne Ryter had nine kills for Idaho.
