Hendrickson signs with Baltimore
Washington State alumnus Mark Hendrickson signed a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles.
Hendrickson, a 6-foot-9 left-handed pitcher, last played in the majors with the Orioles in 2011.
He pitched for Baltimore’s AAA franchise in Norfolk, Virginia, in 2013 and spent last season with the York Revolution, an independent team in York, Pennsylvania.
Hendrickson has 328 appearances in his 10-year MLB career.
Track and field
Bree Winfrey led the Washington State women on the final day of competition at the University of Washington Invitational in Seattle.
Winfrey took third place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.04 seconds, and also anchored the Cougars’ 1,600-meter relay team, which took third in 3 minutes, 50.83 seconds.
WSU’s Liz Harper took fifth place in the 60-meter dash (8.65) and 400 (56.70).
Terrance Chambers and Lucas Sealby led the Cougar men by placing fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 400.
Eastern Washington sophomore Paula Gil-Echevarria set a new school record in the mile with a time of 4:54.37. The previous record – 4:54.67 – was set by Caitlin Prunty in 2004.
Idaho’s Emmanuel Panchol won the men’s triple jump with a leap of 48 feet, 1 3/4 inches.
Wrestling
North Idaho beat Neosho County and Northwest College at the Apodaca duals in Powell, Wyoming.
Michael Nguyen (125 pounds), Bryce Weatherston (141), Tyler McLean (157), Dajour Reece (165) and Jordan Cooks (174) all went 2-0 for the Cardinals.
Softball
Whitworth (4-2) and La Verne (2-2) split a nonconference doubleheader in La Verne, California.
The Pirates won the opener 8-0. They scored all eight runs in the first inning on six run-scoring hits and a passed ball.
Whitworth dropped the nightcap 5-2.
Arena football
The Spokane Shock’s final open tryout will be held Feb. 28 at 9 a.m. at the Shock Training Facilitiy in Spokane Valley.
Participants will be tested in the 40-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle and broad jump and will participate in position and one-on-one drills. Participants are encouraged to wear training, indoor soccer or basketball shoes, but no cleats.
