Chiefs begin East Division road swing with win over Moose Jaw

MOOSE JAW, Saskatchewan – The Spokane Chiefs are starting to get healthy, which may be the perfect medicine for their record.

Tyson Verhelst, returning from an illness, made 32 saves and two other Chiefs returned from injury as Spokane began its six-game excursion through the Western Hockey League’s East Division on Friday with a 3-2 win over Moose Jaw at Mosaic Place.

The Chiefs (25-22-3-1, 54 points) had lost eight of their last nine games, and 11 of 14, with a roster limited by as many as nine scratches. Center Blair Oneschuk and defenseman Jordan Henderson returned from lengthy absences due to upper-body injuries, and right wing Jacob Cardiff will return from a two-game suspension tonight.

Devon McAndrews, Riley Whittingham and Markson Bechtold scored for the Chiefs, who never trailed.

Spokane had no power-play chances for the first time this season. The Warriors (21-28-3-1) finished 0 for 4 on power plays.
