Sued A woman who says she was sexually assaulted by three University of Oregon basketball players has sued the school and head basketball coach Dana Altman. The suit alleges Altman knew when he recruited Brandon Austin that the player had been suspended from Providence College due to allegations of sexual misconduct. The lawsuit also claims the university delayed taking disciplinary action in order to help the basketball team.
Hired The University of Houston has hired Major Applewhite as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The 36-year-old former Texas quarterback was out of coaching this past season after seven years as an assistant at his alma mater.
• Michigan has hired D.J. Durkin as its new defensive coordinator. Durkin is the first addition to the coaching staff officially announced by the school since Jim Harbaugh was hired late last month to coach the Wolverines.
• Former major leaguer Rick Ankiel has been hired by the Washington Nationals as a “life skills coordinator” to mentor players in the minors. Ankiel retired as a player after an 11-season career that began as a 20-year-old pitcher for St. Louis and ended in 2013 as an outfielder for the New York Mets, with stops in Kansas City, Atlanta, Washington and Houston.
Rehired The New York Liberty have rehired Bill Laimbeer as their head coach. The Liberty didn’t renew his contract in October after New York missed the playoffs for the second straight season. The team chose not to exercise his option year. In his two seasons in New York, Laimbeer had gone 26-42. The former Detroit Pistons star led the Detroit Shock to three WNBA titles as the team’s general manager and coach from 2002 to 2009.
Finalized Utilityman Emilio Bonifacio and the Chicago White Sox have finalized a $4 million, one-year contract. The 29-year-old has a .262 career average with 164 stolen bases in eight big league seasons with Arizona, Washington, Miami, Toronto, Kansas City, the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta.
Announced Kansas State coach Bill Snyder has been voted into the College Football Hall of Fame, a person familiar with the results told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the results will be formally announced today in Dallas.
• Florida State defensive end Mario Edwards Jr. has announced he will enter the NFL draft. The 6-foot-3, 294-pound Edwards says he will not return for his senior year.
