MEN’S BASKETBALL: Marcus Paige hit a scooping layup with 8.5 seconds remaining to help No. 18 North Carolina rally to beat No. 5 Louisville 72-71 at Chapel Hill, North Carolina on Saturday.

Paige’s layup capped a frantic comeback from 13 down in the final 8 1/2 minutes for the Tar Heels (12-4, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), who looked as if they were heading for a second straight home ACC loss this week.

Rozier scored 25 points to lead the Cardinals (14-2, 2-1).

No. 1 Kentucky needs 2OT to defeat A&M: Tyler Ulis put No. 1 Kentucky ahead with a 3-pointer deep in double overtime and the Wildcats stayed unbeaten, holding off Texas A&M 70-64 at College Station, Texas.

Kentucky (15-0, 2-0 SEC) was coming off an overtime win against Mississippi on Tuesday. Texas A&M dropped to 9-5, 0-2 in the SEC.

No. 3 Virginia rallies to remain unbeaten: Darion Atkins scored 14 points, and Malcolm Brogdon and Justin Anderson hit key baskets in the final four minutes as third-ranked Virginia outscored No. 13 Notre Dame 9-3 down the stretch to pull out a 62-56 victory at South Bend, Indiana.

Atkins hit a 3-pointer to give the Cavaliers (15-0, 4-0 ACC) the lead as they improved their record against the Irish (15-2, 3-1) to 8-1. The loss ended an 11-game winning streak for ND.

Iowa State hands No. 3 Texas first loss

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Seanna Johnson made a layup with 19 seconds remaining and Iowa State rallied from an 18-point deficit to stun third-ranked Texas 59-57 in Ames, Iowa, knocking the Longhorns from the ranks of the unbeaten.

Nikki Moody had 17 points to lead Iowa State (11-3, 2-1 Big 12), which defeated a top-three team at home for the first time in 12 years.

TCU upsets No. 16 Cowgirls: Zahna Medley scored 17 points and sparked the go-ahead run late in the second half to lift TCU to a 70-66 upset over No. 16 Oklahoma State in Fort Worth, Texas.

Gasol’s 46 points lead Bulls by Bucks

NBA: Pau Gasol had a career-high 46 points to go along with 18 rebounds and the Chicago Bulls bounced back from a pair of ugly losses with a 95-87 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks in Chicago.

The Bulls were coming off a pair of bad losses to Utah and Washington.

Clippers thrash Mavericks: Blake Griffin scored 22 points, Chris Paul had 17 points and 13 assists and the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Dallas Mavericks 120-100 in Los Angeles for their sixth win in eight games and second in a row.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 25 points and Monta Ellis had 15 of his 23 in the first half for Dallas, which had its three-game road winning streak snapped.

Blazers hand Magic sixth straight loss: LaMarcus Aldridge scored 25 points and the Portland Trail Blazers handed the Orlando Magic their sixth consecutive loss, 103-92 in Portland.

Orlando’s Nikola Vucevic scored a career-high 34 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead the Magic.

Aldridge hit 10 of 22 shots to help the Blazers (29-8) tie Golden State for most wins in the NBA this season.

Miami QB returns in Medal of Honor Bowl

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Miami quarterback Ryan Williams threw for 115 yards and a touchdown in his return to action at the Medal of Honor Bowl at Charleston, South Carolina.

Williams helped the National team to a 26-14 victory — and gained himself some extra looks from NFL personnel on hand.

The 6-foot-6 Williams was expected to compete for the Hurricanes’ starting job this year, but instead tore a knee ligament in the spring. He spent the season on the sideline behind Miami’s Brad Kaaya.

Crosby’s overtime goal lifts Penguins

NHL: Sidney Crosby scored a power-play goal 3:41 into overtime, lifting the Pittsburgh Penguins over the host Montreal Canadiens 2-1.

Crosby beat Price with a one-timer, while the Penguins played with the man-advantage. It was only the second power-play goal for the Penguins in their past 23 opportunities.

Streaking Capitals drop Red Wings: John Carlson and Joel Ward scored in the second period, Braden Holtby stopped 26 shots and the Washington Capitals beat the Detroit Red Wings in Washington.

Troy Brouwer also scored for Washington, which improved to 12-1-4 in its last 17 games.

Ferrer beats Berdych in Qatar Open final

TENNIS: David Ferrer won his 22nd career ATP title when he defeated Tomas Berdych 6-4, 7-5 in the Qatar Open final on Doha, Qatar.

Ferrer made it six consecutive years he has won at least one title.

Wawrinka, Bedene to meet in Chennai Open final: Stan Wawrinka will defend his Chennai Open title in Chennai, India against Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia, the first qualifier to reach the final in the tournament’s 20-year history.

Wawrinka beat fourth-seeded David Goffin of Belgium 7-5, 6-3, while Bedene overcame third-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8) in the semifinals.

Johnson, three others tied for lead in Hawaii

GOLF: Zach Johnson putted for birdie on every hole and made seven of them for a 6-under 67 that put him in a four-way tie for the lead after two rounds of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Kapalua, Hawaii.

Johnson was halfway home to becoming the first repeat winner at Kapalua who wasn’t from Australia — Stuart Appleby and Geoff Ogilvy were the others.

Hirscher wins World Cup giant slalom

SLALOM: Overall World Cup leader Marcel Hirscher of Austria swept to victory in a giant slalom in Adelboden, Switzerland, denying Alexis Pinturault an emotional win for France.
