In brief: Stars use three-goal period to put away Blackhawks for 6-3 win

NHL: Cody Eakin, Erik Cole and Shawn Horcoff scored in the third period, leading the visiting Dallas Stars to a 6-3 victory over the slumping Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday.

Eakin also had a shorthanded goal in the first and Tyler Seguin had a goal and an assist for Dallas. Seguin is tied with Rangers star Rick Nash for the NHL lead with 28 goals.

The Stars and Blackhawks were tied at 3 when Chicago defenseman Johnny Oduya was sent off for tripping Seguin at 1:22 of the third. Eakin then capped a nifty passing sequence for Dallas with a tap-in goal on the power play.

Cole made it 5-3 when he finished off a 2-on-1 with Jason Spezza, and Horcoff added an empty-netter with a minute left.

Rangers thump Penguins: Rick Nash scored twice to lift his goal total to an NHL-high 28 and New York drummed host Pittsburgh 5-2.

Derek Stepan also scored twice for the surging Rangers and Derick Brassard had a goal and an assist.Henrik Lundqvist made 32 saves for the Rangers, who needed 26 seconds to jump in front and cruise.

Red Wings rally to win: Henrik Zetterberg scored three goals in the third period to cap an impressive Detroit comeback, lifting the Red Wings to a 6-4 victory over visiting Buffalo on Sunday night – the Sabres’ 11th consecutive loss.

It was the sixth career hat trick for the Detroit captain, and it came after the Red Wings wiped out an early three-goal deficit against the Sabres.

Evans sparks Pelicans past Raptors 95-93

NBA: Tyreke Evans scored on a driving layup with less than 2 seconds to go and visiting New Orleans beat Toronto 95-93, their first victory in seven meetings with the Raptors.

Evans scored 26 points, and Alexis Ajinca had 22 to help the Pelicans win without injured starters Anthony Davis and Jrue Holiday. Davis and Holiday sat out for the second straight game. Davis is sidelined by a sprained toe on his left foot, and Holiday has a sore right ankle.

Eric Gordon added 14 points for New Orleans, and Omer Asik had 11. DeMar DeRozan led Toronto with 22 points. • Thunder rout Magic: Kevin Durant had 21 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists, and visiting Oklahoma City ran past Orlando 127-99.

Russell Westbrook finished with 17 points and six assists. Serge Ibaka and Dion Waiters each added 16 points.

The Thunder never trailed, and led by as many as 38 on their way to snapping a four-game road losing streak.

Spurs stifle Jazz: Tiago Splitter scored 14 points, Kawhi Leonard had 12 points and nine rebounds and San Antonio never trailed while holding Utah to a season-low scoring total in an 89-69 victory over the visiting Jazz.

Tim Duncan added 11 points in 23 minutes for San Antonio, which has won three straight – including the last two with Leonard back in the lineup.

No. 15 Tarheels get past Virginia Tech

College Basketball: Justin Jackson scored 16 points and No. 15 North Carolina held on for a sloppy 68-53 win over Virginia Tech in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Brice Johnson added 12 points and 11 rebounds to help the Tar Heels win their fourth straight.

North Carolina shot 44 percent and overcame 17 turnovers – its most in nearly a month – by forcing Virginia Tech into 14.

LeVert’s season done: Michigan has lost Caris LeVert for the rest of the season after the standout guard hurt his left foot during Saturday night’s victory over Northwestern.

The Wolverines were already facing an uphill climb to make the NCAA tournament, and losing LeVert could be devastating. The school says he is scheduled to have surgery this week.

Ballard, LSU upset 10th-ranked Kentucky

Women’s Basketball: Danielle Ballard scored a season-high 25 points to go with five assists, and LSU posted its second straight upset of a ranked team, 84-79 over No. 10 Kentucky in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The Lady Tigers improved to 3-1 since Ballard, who last season averaged 10.7 points, returned after being suspended for LSU’s first 14 games for a violation of team rules.

Kentucky turned the ball over 26 times, leading to 27 LSU points.

UConn atop ACC: Moriah Jefferson scored 15 points and added seven assists and six rebounds and No. 2 UConn beat South Florida 92-50 in Storrs, Connecticut, to claim sole possession of first place in the American Athletic Conference.

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis led UConn with 18 points and Breanna Stewart had 17 with 10 rebounds.

McGregor makes quick work of Siver

Miscellany: Conor McGregor stopped Denis Siver at 1:54 of the second round in a non-title bout in the UFC Fight Night Card at the TD Garden in Boston.

Referee Herb Dean stopped the bout after McGregor took down Siver and landed hard overhand lefts to his head.

McGregor, from Dublin, Ireland, improved to 17-2 with his 12th straight victory. He’s the fifth-ranked featherweight in the UFC.

Dufour-Lapointe, Benna win: Canadian freestyle skier Justine Dufour-Lapointe added to her Olympic gold medal by winning the world moguls title, while Anthony Benna of France won the men’s gold in Kreischberg, Austria.

Dufour-Lapointe scored 87.25 points in the final. Benna scored 86.89 to beat defending champion Mikael Kingsbury of Canada by 0.35 points.

Reichelt edges Swiss: Hannes Reichelt of Austria spoiled Switzerland’s big day to win the host nation’s signature World Cup downhill in Wengen, Switzerland.

Reichelt took victory ahead of three Swiss former winners by completing the 2.7-mile Lauberhorn course in 2 minutes, 36.14 seconds.

Giants, Blanco agree: Outfielder Gregor Blanco and the San Francisco Giants reached agreement on a $7.5 million, two-year contract to avoid arbitration, a person with knowledge of the deal said.
