In brief: Epic cross-country skiing event at Mount Spokane
The region’s biggest cross-country skiing event of the season – a race or a tour, depending on how you want to ski it – is set for 11 a.m. on Feb. 8 at Mount Spokane State Park.
The Spokane Langlauf 10-kilometer cross-country citizens race is led by elite skiers, but it also celebrates a Woollies Division for skiers donned in nonsynthetic clothing, and a Woodies Award for the top male and female finishers on wood skis.
Parking at Mount Spokane is limited at the Selkirk Lodge on Langlauf race day as hundreds of skiers and their families arrive well before the 11 a.m. and start to figure out the right wax for the race course.
The 37th annual Langlauf once again will be a classic-style race – no skating allowed – with plaques, medals and ribbons for the winners. Everyone in the field of about 200 skiers is eligible for the postrace prize drawings.

IDFG big game adjustments
The Idaho Fish and Game Commission has set seasons for moose, bighorn sheep and mountain goats for 2015, increasing moose tags for the Panhandle Region and adding new hunts farther south for bighorn sheep.
Changes for North Idaho areas include:
• Panhandle Region: Add 20 additional antlered moose tags and additional hunting opportunity for antlerless moose hunts.
• Clearwater: Extend season for bighorn sheep late controlled hunt in Unit 17; Split mountain goat hunt area creating two hunts and adding two tags.
Specifics of these changes will be available in the new rules brochure by the end of February.
Women’s Souper Bowl set
The 10th annual Women’s Souper Bowl is set for Sunday at Mount Spokane to encourage ladies to try out winter sports – on a time schedule that allows getting back to town for the other Super Bowl if desired.
Activities include nordic skiing and snowshoeing, treats, prizes and lunch 9 a.m.-1 p.m. based out of Selkirk Lodge. The fundraiser supports the Women’s and Children’s Free Restaurant.
