Andrew Benintendi powers Arkansas to super regional win

Associated Press

Andrew Benintendi moved into a tie for the national lead with his 19th home run, and Arkansas used a six-run sixth inning to open its NCAA super regional with an 18-4 win over Missouri State on Friday in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

The win puts the Razorbacks one win away from their first College World Series appearance since 2012. The second game in the best two-of-three series is set for today.

Benintendi, the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, led off the sixth with a solo home run to left center off Bears starter Jon Harris. The blast put Arkansas up 5-1, and it opened the door for the six-run inning.

Joe Serrano added a three-run home run in the inning and finished 3 for 4, while Trey Killian earned the win.

Virginia 5, Maryland 3: Kevin Doherty’s three-run double capped a five-run eighth inning and the Cavaliers beat the Terrapins in a super regional opener in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Doherty’s hit came after the Terrapins walked Joe McCarthy intentionally. The blast was almost caught at the wall by Terps center fielder LaMonte Wade, but it went off his glove as the bases cleared.

Connor Jones, who allowed three hits and three runs in seven innings, got the victory.

Josh Sborz finished for his 14th save.

Florida 13, Florida State 5: JJ Schwarz hit his 16th home run – one shy of tying Florida’s freshman record – and the Gators beat the Seminoles in a super regional opener at Gainesville, Florida.

Florida topped the error-prone Seminoles for the eighth time in the last nine games in Gainesville and moved one victory from a trip to the College World Series.

The Gators chased Florida State ace Boomer Biegalski in the third, his shortest outing of the season.

Miami 3, VCU 2: Jacob Heyward hit a two-run single to highlight a three-run second inning, and the Hurricanes topped the Rams in a super regional opener at Coral Gables, Florida.

Miami can wrap up its first trip to the College World Series since 2008 with a win today. Ricky Eusebio had two hits and an RBI for the Hurricanes.
