Retired Veteran catcher John Buck, an 11-year major leaguer who was attempting to land a job with the Atlanta Braves as a backup catcher, has retired. The 34-year-old, an All-Star in 2010 with Toronto, hit 134 home runs with seven big league teams. He hit .225 in 32 games with Seattle and the Los Angeles Angels last year.
Extended Iona men’s basketball coach Tim Cluess, who has led the Gaels to 118 wins and two NCAA tournaments in five seasons, had his contract extended through 2019-20. Iona has won at least 20 games and made a postseason appearance in each of Cluess’ five seasons.
• Coach Archie Miller got three more years added to his contract after leading Dayton to a second straight NCAA men’s basketball tournament appearance. It’s the second year in a row that Miller has received an improved deal.
Joined Former Germany coach Berti Vogts has been pals with Jurgen Klinsmann for a long time, and now the former German national soccer team coach will work alongside his former player in a long-term role. Vogts was hired as technical adviser to the U.S. national team after serving as a special adviser before and during last year’s World Cup.
Donated The University of Maryland-Eastern Shore announced that Tiger Woods has donated $10,000 to launch a scholarship fund honoring Charlie Sifford, who broke the color barrier in golf as the first black PGA Tour member. The money will go toward need-based scholarships for minority students with an interest in golf. Maryland-Eastern Shore is the nation’s only historically black university that offers a degree in professional golf management. Sifford died last month at age 92.
Failed Defensive end Randy Gregory says he’s tested positive for marijuana at the NFL scouting combine last month and that he failed two drug tests at Nebraska last year. Gregory went into February’s scouting combine projected to be among the top 10 picks in the draft.
Transferred Virginia Tech’s leading scorer last season, Adam Smith, will finish his college basketball career at another school. Coach Buzz Williams said that Smith will graduate in May and play his final season elsewhere. Smith’s new college home will be his third. He transferred to Virginia Tech from UNC Wilmington in 2012.
Chosen Right-hander Yovani Gallardo was selected as the opening-day starter for the Texas Rangers. This will be Gallardo’s sixth straight opening-day assignment. The previous five were with the Milwaukee Brewers.
