Prep roundup: Lake City advances to state softball

Michaela Flerchinger allowed one run over seven innings, Heather Hawkes hit a solo homer and Lake City advanced to the Idaho state softball tournament for the ninth straight year with a 4-1 win over Rocky Mountain in a 5A play-in game Saturday in Fruitland, Idaho.

Flerchinger scattered seven hits. Lake City managed just four hits off Rocky Mountain starter Hayden McKenney but made them count.

The Timberwolves will play Mountain View in the first round of state on Friday in Post Falls.

• Lakeland beat Sandpoint 12-8 in Rathdrum and claimed a spot in the Idaho 4A state tournament.

• Emma Dingman went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and Dani Hayes had three hits and drove in four runs as Almira/Coulee-Hartline routed Cusick 16-0 in five innings in the District 7 1B title game at Kettle Falls.

Hayes pitched all five innings and gave up just three hits while striking out five.

The win gave ACH the top seed to next weekend’s regional tournament. Cusick is the second seed.

Boys soccer

Central Valley’s Chase Reidt, J.D. Hauenstein and Noah Whitman scored and the Bears edged Lewis and Clark 3-2 in the District 8 4A title match at Spokane Falls Community College.

Whitman’s goal in the 59th minute gave CV a 3-1 lead. Jackson Moore and Jared Mehaffey scored for the Tigers.

The win gave Central Valley the top seed to the regional tournament. Lewis and Clark advances as the second seed.

• Barrett Freshler scored twice and assisted on another goal and Ferris blanked Gonzaga Prep 4-0 at SFCC to claim the third and final seed to regionals.

Terry Cox and Seth Buller also scored for the Saxons, who held a 19-4 shot advantage.

• Cheney’s Kelby Holland scored on a free kick from 25 yards out early in the first overtime and the Blackhawks beat East Valley 2-1 in a District 7 2A elimination match in Cheney.

The Blackhawks’ Spencer Yeager opened the scoring in the 15th minute and East Valley’s Tristan Gresh knotted the match at 1 with a 52nd-minute goal.

Cheney will play at Pullman on Tuesday in the title match. East Valley was eliminated.

Baseball

Jordan Ross went 4 for 5 with two doubles and Lake City routed Vallivue 9-1 in Lewiston in an Idaho 5A state play-in game.

The Timberwolves’ Stephen Vaudreuil added a third-inning home run that put LC on top 6-0.

Lake City will play Capital in the first round of the 5A state tournament May 14 at Boise Hawks Memorial Stadium in Boise.

• Alex Bowdish struck out 11 in a complete-game effort, Connor Ramm laced a two-run double in the third inning and East Valley edged Pullman 4-3 in a District 7 2A elimination game in Pullman.

The Knights’ Colin Spendlove had an RBI single in the fifth that turned out to be the winner.

Bowdish scattered five hits, walked four and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fifth.

Pullman starter Mike Peterson took the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings.

East Valley will play at Cheney on Monday in another loser-out game.

• Cameron Marchand hit a three-run homer in Cheney’s eight-run third inning and the Blackhawks dumped visiting Clarkston 11-1 in five innings in a District 7 2A elimination game.

The Blackhawks’ Kyle Jones was 3 for 3 and Dominic Bonilla and Cade Vanwormer each added two hits.

Cheney starter Connor Pratt allowed a run on three hits. He struck out 10 and now has 86 strikeouts in 51 innings this season.

Track and field

The Grangeville boys edged St. Maries for the team title at the Idaho 2A District I-II meet in Lapwai. Orofino won the girls title.

The Logos boys and girls claimed the 1A District I-II team titles.
