Man accused of fighting with woman, pointing a gun at a bystander

A man accused of chasing a woman through downtown Spokane and then pointing a gun at a bystander who tried to intervene is in the Spokane County Jail facing multiple charges.

Witnesses told police that they saw Gene R. Burks, 48, screaming at a woman in the area of Pacific and State just before 11 p.m. Wednesday. One man said Burks pointed a gun at him when he tried to intervene, according to court documents.

Police caught up with Burks in the area of Riverside and Division. An officer reported seeing Burks throw a gun in the back of a pickup truck as he was running from police, according to court documents. The gun was recovered and officers found two loaded magazines in Burks’ pockets when they arrested him.

Police also found two sunglass cases containing small baggies with a white powder inside, court documents said.

Burks, who police say has multiple felony convictions in Michigan, was arrested on suspicious of second-degree assault, unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance. His bond was set at $75,000 during a brief court appearance Thursday.
