‘Heroes of the Holocaust’ essay and art winners

Inland Northwest students were asked to write essays or create art on the theme “Heroes of the Holocaust.”

Gabriela Marquis, an eighth-grader in the Odyssey program at Libby Center won first place and $250 in the middle school division of the 10th annual Eva Lassman Memorial Writing Contest.

Lauren Welch, an eighth-grader at Garfield-Palouse Middle School, won second place. Tia Stangle, an eighth-grader at Glover Middle School won third place.

In the second annual art contest, Ellie Huffmanparent won first place and $250 in the middle school division.

Emma Kent, an eighth-grader at Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy, won second place. Anjali Gunning, an eighth-grader at Northwood Middle School won third place.

In the high school division, Derek Jostead, a junior at East Valley High School, won first place and $400 in the writing contest. Audrey Burgess, a senior at East Valley, placed second, Annie Bortz, a junior at Mead High School, placed third.

In the art contest, Tia Ramirez, a junior at On Track Academy, won first place and $400 for her stained glass work, “Light Amidst Darkness.” Caroline Romano and Isaac Olson placed second and third, repspectively, both are seniors at Gonzaga Prep.

Exhibit: The high school and middle school art entries are on display through April 30 at Dodson’s Jewelers, 516 W. Riverside Ave.

The Spokane Community Observance of the Holocaust will be at 7 p.m. May 5 at Temple Beth Shalom, 1322 E. 30th Ave.

The first place winners of the writing contest will read their essays and the winning artwork will be displayed in the lobby. The evening will also include a children’s candle processional, candle lighting ceremony and music by the Mead High School orchestra.

Ellie Huffmanparent won first place in the second annual Community Observance of the Holocaust Art Contest with a song and the accompanying video. She is an eighth-grade home-school student. ‘The Story’

Today I’m gonna tell you a story and you know it’s not a very happy story but it’s one that deserves to be told.

Women, men, boys, and girls all gone from this world. Six million innocent lives lost.

There were a few who grabbed onto the light did what they felt was right and helped others to survive.

They risked everything they had because they knew it was wrong so in their honor and memory I’m writing this song.

Have you ever heard the story about the woman who left her good life behind because she couldn’t stand what they were doing?

Have you ever heard the story about the the teacher who was outraged by the persecution? So she did what she did best and gave those who were denied it education.

Have you ever heard the story about the nurse who smuggled out about 2,500 children out in potato sacks and coffins?

You know I’m too young to have ever been there but I’ve seen hearts beyond repair, I’ve seen the pain they left in their wake.

Still can’t comprehend how they could do this. Still so happy that evil loses. Still telling stories so they’ll never forget.

They risked everything they had because they knew it was wrong. So in their honor and memory I’m writing this song.
