Area women’s soccer: EWU opens season with 1-0 win over Grand Canyon
The 2016 women’s soccer season got underway on Friday, with all four area Division I teams taking the pitch.
Eastern Washington defeated Grand Canyon 1-0 in Cheney as reigning Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year Chloe Williams scored in the fifth minute of overtime for the Eagles. On an EWU corner kick, Williams picked up a loose ball in front of the net and delivered what would hold up as the winning goal.
EWU senior Mallory Taylor registered her third career shutout.
South Dakota 1, Idaho 0: The Vandals saw their nation-long 14 game unbeaten streak come to an end after the Coyotes’ Amanda Carpio scored in the 86th minute in Vermillion, South Dakota.
After Idaho keeper Torell Stewart directed a save toward the end line, Carpio stayed on the play, finding the ball just before it crossed the line for a corner, and sliding in a shot just past the diving Stewart.
The Vandals dominated on the stat line, taking 14 shots to five by the Coyotes. Stewart made three saves.
Gonzaga 1, Nevada 0: Sarah Carter’s first collegiate goal gave the Bulldogs the win at the Outrigger Resorts Soccer Classic in Waipahu, Hawaii.
(16) Brigham Young 2, Washington State 1: Ashley Hatches second goal of the game lifted BYU over WSU in the second overtime at Pullman.
Kaitlyn Johnson scored Washington State’s goal in the first half.
