Newsmakers: Marques Colston told he’ll be cut by Saints

Injured Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton will start the season on the disabled list because of an injured left knee. Hamilton, the 2010 A.L. MVP, is projected to need eight weeks of recovery time.

Released Saints all-time leading receiver Marques Colston was informed he’ll be released. The 32-year-old Colston owns Saints receiving records for catches, yards and touchdowns.

Denied A Kansas judge refused to lower the bond for a former Cowboys RB accused of hitting three people with a car in Wichita, Kansas. Joseph Randle, 24, is being held on $100,000 bond for four counts of aggravated battery and other charges.

Pleaded Former NFL WR Reggie Rucker pleaded guilty to stealing from two children’s charities to pay his gambling debts. Rucker was charged last week in U.S. District Court in Cleveland with wire fraud and lying to FBI agents.

Reduced Executives Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini had their bans from soccer reduced from eight years to six by FIFA’s appeal body, two days before the sport’s ruling body tries to elect a new president.

Sued Rangers pitcher Cole Hamels struck out trying to see last year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show despite paying nearly $70,000 to a London-based event promoter for VIP tickets, according to a recent lawsuit. Hamels is seeking $150,000 in damages.

Hired Former Nebraska standout John Parrella will return as an assistant coach and former NFL GM Billy Devaney will join Mike Riley’s staff in an administrative position. Devaney was the St. Louis Rams GM from 2008-11.

Northern Iowa hired David Harris as its new athletic director. Harris, who is currently a senior associate A.D. at Iowa State, will take over at the end of March.

Retired Two-time Olympic medalist McKayla Maroney said she’s stepping away from competition. Her peeved expression on the medal stand at the 2012 games after a miscue that cost her gold became an Internet sensation.

Confirmed Former Tennessee receiver Drae Bowles confirmed he assisted a woman who said she had been raped by two other players and that later he was attacked by teammates and told by coach Butch Jones that he had “betrayed the team.” An amended complaint filed in a Title IX lawsuit against Tennessee states a woman called 911 from Bowles’ car to report a rape in the early morning hours of Nov. 16, 2014.
