WCC roundup: Pepperdine ends Gaels’ winning streak
Jett Raines scored a career-high 24 points, Stacy Davis had 17 points with 10 rebounds, and Pepperdine snapped the Saint Mary’s Gaels’ eight-game win streak with a 67-64 victory in Malibu, California, on Saturday.
Jeremy Major made a jumper to give the Waves (14-2, 5-1) a 65-61 lead with 19 seconds left. Calvin Hermanson answered with a 3 to pull the Gaels (10-6, 3-2 WCC) to 65-64, and Davis made a pair of free throws with 10 seconds remaining.
Pepperdine chose not to foul on the ensuing possession, allowing Hermanson a 3-point attempt from the top of the arc with 2 seconds left, but it hit the rim to end it.
Dane Pineau scored 16 points and Hermanson had 14 for Saint Mary’s.
Pepperdine trailed 36-29 at the break and used a 12-5 spurt to tie it at 41. Neither team held more than a four-point lead the rest of the way.
Pacific 60, Loyola Marymount 58: Alec Kobre scored 19 points and Jacob Lampkin’s layup with 58 seconds left gave the Tigers (4-11, 3-3) a victory over the Lions (7-9, 0-5) in Los Angeles.
Lampkin scored underneath after a great baseline pass from Ray Bowles. Both teams exchanged misses before LMU’s diminutive point guard, Brandon Brown, couldn’t find an opening in the lane and his pass to Shamar Johnson underneath was stolen as the game ended.
Brown gave the Lions a 50-48 lead with five minutes remaining before Kobre scored the next eight points to put Pacific back on top. Brown scored five points and Buay Tuach three in an 8-2 run to tie it at 58 with 1:26 left.
Kobre made four 3-pointers for Pacific, who had nine 3-pointers on 21 attempts. Sami Eleraky added 11 points.
Brown finished with 15 points for Loyola Marymount. David Humphries added 12 points and Tauch 10.
BYU 102, San Francisco 92: Chase Fischer scored 25 points and Nick Emery added 21 to help the Cougars (12-5, 3-1) beat the Dons in Provo, Utah.
Zac Seljaas chipped in 20 points for BYU, which scored its most points of the season and plays at conference-leading Gonzaga (13-3, 5-0) on Thursday.
San Francisco had a two-point lead with 2:47 left in the first half. Fischer made a 3-pointer, sparking a 9-1 spurt to give BYU a 51-45 halftime lead.
Seljaas’ 3-pointer stretched BYU’s lead to 10 points early in the second half. Uche Ofoegbu scored on a dunk, and Ronnie Boyce III made back-to-back jumpers to pull the Dons to 80-74 with 7:18 remaining. Fischer and Seljaas answered with consecutive 3-pointers to push the Cougars’ lead back to 10 points with six minutes left and BYU cruised from there.
Santa Clara 65, San Diego 53: Nate Kratch scored 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting and Jared Brownridge made 5 of 7 shots and scored 12 to help the Broncos (6-12, 2-4) beat the host Toreros (5-10, 0-4).
Kai Healey and KJ Feagin scored 11 apiece for Santa Clara. Healy made a career-high three 3-pointers. Healey and Matt Hauser scored five points each during a 14-2 run that gave the Broncos a 50-36 lead with nine minutes to play.
A three-point play by Brett Bailey pulled the Toreros within eight with 50 seconds left, but Kratch and Feagin combined to make 4 of 4 free throws from there to seal it.
Bailey led San Diego with a career-high 22 points.
