Bicyclist collides with police car

A bicyclist and a Spokane police car collided at the intersection of Upriver Drive and Haven Street Tuesday evening, sending the bicyclist to the hospital with serious injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening.

The cyclist was going south on Haven while the police officer, who has not been named, was driving east on Upriver Drive around 5 p.m. Tuesday. Video footage shows that the cyclist ran the stop sign and ran into the driver’s side door of the patrol car, despite the officer’s efforts to avoid a collision, according to a police department news release.

The driver’s side window of the patrol car was smashed and the side mirror was broken off. The officer sustained minor injuries from the broken glass, the news release said.

The road was closed for a little over two hours while investigators collected evidence and spoke to witnesses.
