In brief: Top-seeded Florida Gators advance to College World Series

College baseball: JJ Schwarz broke out of a two-week hitting slump by driving in five runs – most of them on a grand slam – and Florida beat rival Florida State 7-0 on Monday night in Gainesville, Florida, to secure the last spot in the College World Series.

The Gators (52-14) won the final two games in the best-of-3 super regional to earn their fifth trip to Omaha, Nebraska, in the past seven years. Florida, the overall No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, will play Coastal Carolina on Sunday night.

The Gators can only hope Schwarz keeps swinging as he did against the Seminoles (41-22). With the bases loaded, the sophomore hammered Jim Voyles’ hanging curveball over the left-field bleachers to put the Gators up 6-0 in the fifth inning. He added an RBI double in the sixth.

That was plenty of cushion for reliever Dane Dunning (6-3).

Mexico ties Venezuela in Copa America

Soccer: Jesus Manuel “Tecatito” Corona’s goal in the 80th minute gave Mexico a 1-1 tie against Venezuela in Houston and first place in Group C of the Copa America.

By winning their group, El Tri avoids a quarterfinal matchup with Lionel Messi and tournament favorite Argentina. They’re likely headed for an easier matchup with Chile in the knockout round, leaving Venezuela to face mighty Argentina.

Uruguay gets elusive win: Abel Hernandez scored in the first half, Mathias Corujo added a late breakaway goal and Uruguay beat Jamaica 3-0 in Santa Clara, California, to snap a five-game Copa America winless streak.

Both teams were ruled out of contention for the knockout stages after losses in their first two games.

Jamaica was the only team to not score a goal in the tournament.

Italy tops Belgium: Goals from Emanuele Giaccherini and Graziano Pelle combined with excellent defending helped Italy to a 2-0 win over Belgium in their first match at the European Championship in Lyon, France.

Described as one of the worst Squadra Azzurra ever by Italian media, Antonio Conte’s aging team defied the odds to take the lead in Group E with an impressive collective display at Lyon’s Grand Stade.

Sweden, Ireland draw: Zlatan Ibrahimovic rescued Sweden yet again in a 1-1 draw with Ireland in Saint-Denis, France, even though he couldn’t set a European Championship scoring record.

Sweden trailed until the 71st minute, when Ibrahimovic created the equalizer.

Ireland has taken a deserved lead in the 48th minute with Wes Hoolahan scored from a sweetly struck half-volley from inside the area.

Spain blanks Czech Republic: Gerard Pique finally broke down the Czech Republic’s stubborn defense with a goal in the 87th minute to give Spain a 1-0 victory in the opening match of its European Championship title defense in Toulouse, France.

Guzan’s future on hold: United States goalkeeper Brad Guzan says any decision about his club future at Aston Villa will wait until after the Copa America.

Guzan spoke as the U.S. awaited Thursday’s quarterfinal against Ecuador. Guzan had consecutive shutouts in wins over Costa Rica and Paraguay that closed group play.

Guzan fell out of favor at Aston Villa this season after being the starter there since 2012.

Kentucky forward Willis arrested

College basketball: The Boone County Sheriff’s Department says Kentucky senior forward Derek Willis was found lying in the street and stated that he had “a lot” to drink when he was arrested for public intoxication.

The arrest citation obtained by the AP says that a deputy observed Willis lying outside the open driver’s side door of a car and had to awaken him Saturday morning in Union, Kentucky. The citation adds that the deputy noticed a “strong odor” of alcohol coming from Willis and the car and said he had extremely slurred speech.

Willis was arrested for a first and second offense and later released after paying a $50 bond.

Ex-WSU coach Eastman retires

Miscellany: Los Angeles Clippers assistant coach Kevin Eastman is retiring, the team announced.

Eastman was an assistant to Doc Rivers for two seasons. He also served as the Clippers’ vice president of basketball operations during the 2014-15 season.

The 61-year-old veteran basketball mind spent eight seasons on Rivers’ staff with the Boston Celtics, winning a championship ring in 2008.

Eastman was a collegiate head coach at Washington State.

Thiem wins tennis title: Dominic Thiem won his fourth ATP title of the year when he beat Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4 in the rain-delayed final of the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, Germany.
