PORTLAND – Oregon State Police said one person died after a tree fell onto a pickup truck during a windstorm on the northern coast of Oregon.

KPTV-TV reported a tree fell onto the truck between Cannon Beach and Seaside on U.S. Highway 26 about 5 miles east of U.S. Highway 101.

Weather forecasters said winds topped 70 mph in Astoria on Wednesday night. Oregon police were urging motorists in the area to avoid travel.

The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning through early Thursday from Florence, Oregon, to Ocean Park, Washington. Winds of 45 to 55 mph were expected, with gusts to 70 mph and up to 85 mph possible in exposed areas. The Federal Aviation Administration delayed flights for a time into the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Wednesday evening due to the wind.
