Area roundup: Weston Hatten’s homer helps WSU rally for 4-1 win
Weston Hatten hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the seventh inning, Ryan Walker pitched 5 1/3 of scoreless relief and Washington State went on to a 4-1 victory over Northeastern on Friday in Pullman.
Walker’s first home run of the season came after Stefan Van Horn reached base on a wild-pitch strikeout and gave the Cougars a 2-1 lead.
Dugan Shirer added a two-out, two-run single in the eighth after the Cougars loaded the bases on a single by Trek Stemp, a bunt single by Derek Chapman and a walk to Van Horn.
Stemp and Jack Strunc had two hits each for WSU (5-9).
Walker (2-1) scattered four hits, walked two and struck out one in relief of Ryan Ward who gave up four hits, two walks, and an earned run while striking out four.
The Huskies (7-6) scored their run in the second.
Gonzaga rained out: The Bulldogs’ series opener at Texas-San Antonio was postponed because of unplayable conditions following rain. The teams will play a single game Saturday with a doubleheader on Sunday.
Men’s basketball
Race Martin scored 23 points and CC Spokane advanced to the semifinals of the Northwest Athletic Conference championship with a 94-74 victory over the Chemeketa Storm (19-12) at Everett CC.
CCS (27-5) plays Big Bend, 73-65 winner over Highline, in a semifinal today at 6 p.m.
Martin was 10 of 16 from the field for the Sasquatch, who shot 50 percent overall and 60 percent in the second half after leading 44-38 at the break.
Levi Taylor added 17 points, Jacob DeVries 14, Kage Sobotta 11 and Jake Love 10 with 11 rebounds.
CCS scored 29 points off turnovers and outscored the Storm 27-12 from the arc.
Women’s basketball
Gese Gruber scored 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting and CC Spokane used a big fourth quarter to beat the Umpqua Riverhawks 66-59 and advance to the fourth-place game at the NWAC championship at Everett CC.
The Sasquatch (25-7) will play Centralia at 9 a.m. Sunday. Centralia defeated Bellevue 55-46.
The Sasquatch trailed 43-40 after three quarters before outscoring the Riverhawks 26-16 in the final period.
Gruber and Bri King, who scored 13 points, each made three 3-pointers while Jenessa Heine was 4-of-8 shooting in adding 10 points.
The big difference was from the arc where the Sasquatch scored 24 points to nine for Umpqua (25-8).
Women’s golf
Eastern Washington finished with a two-round total of 30-over 313 to tie Creighton for 10th place at the13-team Lady Thunderbird golf tournament at Sunbrook GC in St. George, Utah.
South Dakota State won at 287 behind the 3-under 141 performance of Hallie Getz.
EWU’s top finisher was Marissa Borja, who finished 31st at 11-over 155.
Softball
CC Spokane split a doubleheader with GateWay Community College in Phoenix, losing 8-7 before coming back for a 5-0 win.
CCS (8-2) scored four runs in the seventh to tie in the opener before GateWay scored a run in the bottom of the inning to win. The Sasquatch outhit the Geckos 13-6.
The Sasquatch scattered eight hits to blank GateWay in the second game while making the most on offense with six hits and five errors.
