NIC opens in NJCAA tournament on Tuesday

North Idaho College will face Southwest Tennessee in the second round of the NJCAA men’s basketball tournament at 6:30 p.m. PDT Tuesday in Hutchinson, Kansas.

The fifth-seeded Cardinals (31-1) had a first-round bye. No. 12 Southwest Tennessee (29-4) defeated Spartanburg Methodist 77-73 on Monday. NIC is playing in the national tournament for the first time since 1997.

No. 13 Salt Lake (27-8), which upset the Cardinals in the Region 18 tournament championship game, defeated Northeast Mississippi 77-64 Monday. If NIC and Salt Lake both win Tuesday, the Region 18 rivals will square off Thursday.

Whitworth University’s George Valle and Kenny Love have been named to the 2015-16 D3hoops.com All-West Region team.

Valle was named to the first team and Love to the second.

Valle, a senior from Bellevue, Washington, has already been named the Northwest Conference Player of the Year and a third-team Academic All-American. He averaged team highs of 16.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game this past season.

Love, a junior from Santa Rosa, California, was a first-team All-NWC honoree for the second year in a row. He averaged 14.6 points per game and ranked second in the NWC in assists per game (3.3).

Women’s basketball

Whitworth senior KC McConnell has been named second-team All-West Region by D3hoops.com.

The list of accolades for McConnell continues to grow. She had previously been named first team All-NWC and a first team Academic All-American. McConnell was also one of 10 finalists for the prestigious Jostens Award.

A forward from Clarkston, she averaged 19.8 point, 6.4 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.7 steals per contest this past season.

Baseball

Gonzaga senior infielder Taylor Jones earned WCC/Rawlings Player of the Week honors after posting a .579/.600/.895 slash line with 11 hits, four for extra-bases as the Bullodgs went 4-0 last week.
