Whitworth softball splits two games in Florida

Madi Perez pitched a four-hitter, striking out five, to lead Whitworth to a 7-0 victory over MIT on Monday on the final day of a four-day softball trip to The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida.

When Williams College came up with an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a 7-6 win over the Pirates in the finale of the seven-game trip, it left Whitworth with a 5-2 record in Florida and a 14-5 overall mark.

Shannon Wessel doubled in two runs in the third inning and scored a run in the fifth to provide all the runs Perez (5-4) needed against MIT. Myranda Ramirez went 3 for 4, Morgan Portlock was 2 for 4 and Tessa Matthews, Michelle Silva, Desi Graham and Nikki Olsen also drove in runs for the Pirates.

In the finale, Whitworth went up 6-4 after four innings thanks to a five-run third that included a two-run single by Matthews, but Williams rallied for two runs in the sixth to tie and won it on a Priscilla Pino RBI single in the seventh.

Freshman Bianca Pagdanganan was the WCC women’s choice after she finished fourth at The Gold Rush in the Bay Area in the Bulldogs’ only tournament during February. Two of her three rounds were under par, a 1-under 71 and 2-under 70, as the highest finishing WCC player in the field.
