Prep track glance: Returning state placers throughout the region

Lewis and Clark’s Anna Rodgers crosses the finish line to win the 4A 100-meter dash during the District 8 track and field championships last May. Rodgers went on to win the state title in the 100. She returns this season to defend her title. (Colin Mulvany / The Spokesman-Review)

Greater Spokane League

Returning state placers

Boys: 4A – Nick Johnson, Gonzaga Prep (110 hurdles, state champ); Ben Craig, Central Valley (110h, 3rd); Bryan Anderson, Mead (110h, 7th; 300h, 4th) . 3A – JJ Curry, Rogers (200, 8th; 400, 7th); Jacob Barnes, Mt. Spokane (javelin, 3rd); Noah Martin, University (high jump, state champ).

Girls: 4A – Anna Rodgers, Lewis and Clark (100, state champ; 200, 3rd; long jump, 2nd); Anna Fomin, CV (400, 3rd); Briegan Bester, CV (800, 5th; 1,600, 5th); Kearan Nelson, CV (800, 8th); Zella Conley, Mead (100h, 8th); Sydney Johnson, CV (hj, 3rd).

Outlook

The Central Valley boys and girls are picked to defend their league championships but the Bears are going to have their hands full. CV girls coach Geoff Arte put it best when looking at the race in the girls and could have been talking about the boys: “The league is as good as I have seen it since I’ve been here, especially with the number of state caliber type kids.” In the boys, CV, Mead, Mt. Spokane and Ferris all could win the league. In the girls, it should be a tight race between CV, Lewis and Clark and Mead. In dual competition it’s a numbers game and the CV teams are loaded with numbers. The LC girls will challenge for a state title because of the quality of athletes. The CV girls will be in the state mix, too.

Great Northern League

Returning state placers

Boys: Zechariah Herford, West Valley (100 meters, 5th); Tevin Duke, WV (200, 5th).

Outlook

Graduation hit the league hard especially in the boys, but West Valley is expected to ride its speed and distance crew to a repeat title. In the girls, Pullman, led by do-everything Nkwonta, should dethrone Aquino-led East Valley.
