Longtime Spokane painter/teacher Jack Rogers exhibits this weekend

On Saturday, Spokane Art Supply will host a show and sale of more than 200 watercolors by longtime Spokane artist/teacher Jack Rogers.
The collected works span more than 40 years of the prolific artist’s career. Rogers, 93, is a founding member of the Spokane Watercolor Society. He started the art department at Spokane Falls Community College in 1963 and taught there for 26 years.
He and his wife of 70 years have cleaned out his studio with the help of friends.
“Why would I want to keep all these?” Rogers asked. “I’m putting them out so that people can enjoy them and purchase them at a reasonable price.”
The timing of the show, Veteran’s Day weekend, is fitting. Rogers served in the Army in World War ll. He spent three years on active duty, most of it in the Philippines and as part of the occupational forces in Japan.
Despite suffering a series of strokes last fall, he’s still teaching private students and painting daily.
The unframed works come in all sizes and depict many subjects. An abundance of seascapes, mountain vistas, snow-skiers, fly fishermen, and wooded scenes reflect Rogers’ love of the outdoors.
He plans to be on hand during the show.
“I was given a gift and I want to share it,” he said. “Why put it all back in the drawers? I’m hoping people will take home a memory.”
