In Brief: Williams’ shoulder ‘feels solid,’ in win

From staff and wire reports

Tennis: So about that inflamed right shoulder that was supposed to hinder Serena Williams at the U.S. Open as she seeks a record 23rd major title: It sure seems to be just fine.

“Definitely feels solid,” Williams said.

Not sure? There’s plenty of evidence. No need to take her word – or her coach’s – for it.

Look at the way Williams beat 47th-ranked Johanna Larsson 6-1, 6-1 on Saturday to reach the fourth round at Flushing Meadows in New York and collect the 307th Grand Slam match victory of her career, surpassing Martina Navratilova for most by a woman in the Open era and equaling Roger Federer for most by anyone since 1968.

Williams reached 121 mph on a serve. She had a half-dozen aces, bringing her total this week to 31. She faced only one break point – her first of the tournament – and saved it. She smacked seven return winners. She compiled a 24-5 total edge in winners.

“Tennis-wise, I think it was very satisfying in all aspects. It’s not perfect, of course,” said her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou. “But for someone who didn’t play much matches in the last two months, I think she’s competitive.”

Chappell in the lead at TPC Boston

Golf: Kevin Chappell did just about everything right, even when making his lone bogey, on his way to a 7-under 64 that gave him a one-shot lead in the Deutsche Bank Championship in Norton, Massachusetts, and another chance at his first PGA Tour victory.

Chappell pitched in for eagle on No. 7 and made a 35-foot birdie putt on the next hole. Even better was the 15-foot bogey putt on the 13th hole, and his great escape from a bad shot when trying to lay up on the par-5 18th.

He was at 11-under 131, one shot ahead of PGA champion Jimmy Walker (64) and Paul Casey (66).

Dustin Johnson was poised to join Chappell in the lead until an approach into the woods led to double bogey on the par-5 closing hole.

Jutanugarn 2 shots back in Canada: Ariya Jutanugarn shot a 6-under 66 at the LPGA Manulife Classic in Cambridge, Ontario, leaving her two strokes back in her bid win three straight events for the second time this season.

The second-ranked Jutanugarn was chasing South Koreans Mi Hyang Lee and Hjo Joo Kim at Whistle Bear. Lee also had a 66 to top the leaderboard at 14-under 202, and Kim was a stroke back after a 68.

Jutanugarn closed with a birdie to join Thailand’s P.K. Kongkraphan (69) at 12 under.

Using a driver in competition for the third straight day after shelving it for months, Jutanugarn had eight birdies and two bogeys. She has improved each day, following an opening 70 with a 68.

Maggert takes Calgary lead: Defending champion Jeff Maggert shot his second straight 7-under 63 to take a three-stroke lead in the PGA Tour Champions’ Shaw Charity Classic in Calgary, Alberta.

The 52-year-old Maggert parred the final three holes after making eight birdies and a bogey on the first 15 at Canyon Meadows. The three-time PGA Tour winner has five victories on the 50-and-over tour. He won four times last year, the first two majors in the Regions Tradition and U.S. Senior Open.

Paraguay’s Carlos Franco was second, also shooting 63.

Bernhard Langer was third at 10 under after his second 65. The 59-year-old German star won the Boeing Classic last week in Washington for his fourth victory of the year and 29th overall on tour.

Charles reaches milestone in win

WNBa: Tina Charles scored 23 points, including her 4000th, to help New York beat Phoenix 92-70 in Uncasville, Connecticut.

“We talk about inside that she’s the best post player in the world, men or women.” the Liberty coach said. “She’s that consistent and that dominant. There’s more to her that we’re waiting to see.”

Charles, who also had 15 rebounds, became the sixth-fastest player in WNBA history to reach that milestone and helped move the Liberty closer to clinching at least the third seed in the playoffs. One more victory will assure New York of a bye in the first round and a home game in the second.

FC Dallas beats Portland for 3rd time

Soccer: Mauro Diaz had a goal and an assist to help FC Dallas beat the Portland Timbers for the third time this season, 3-1 in Frisco, Texas.

MLS-leading Dallas (15-7-6) has won two straight to stretch its Western Conference lead to eight points over Real Salt Lake.

The Timbers (9-11-8) have lost three of four. They have a three-point lead over San Jose for the sixth playoff spot in the conference.

Bulls defeat Whitecaps: Bradley Wright-Phillips scored in the 50th minute and New York beat Vancouver 1-0 in Vancouver, British Columbia to extend its club-record unbeaten streak to 10 games.

The Red Bulls (12-9-7) moved into a tie for second place in the Eastern Conference with Toronto FC.

Revolution ends 6-game slide: Juan Agudelo and Chris Tierney scored and New England beat Colorado in Foxboro, Massachusetts to end a six-game winless streak.

The Revolution (7-12-9) had been shutout four straight times. Brad Knight had his second shutout of the season, including a diving stop of a close-range shot by Dillon Powers in the 18th minute, for the Revolution.

Fire shutout Union: Michael de Leeuw had a goal and an assist, Arturo Alvarez scored and the Chicago Fire beat the Philadelphia Union 3-0 in Bridgeview, Illinois.

Chicago’s Sean Johnson had four saves for his fifth shutout of the season.

The Fire (6-12-8) have won three straight at home against Philadelphia (11-8-7).

Ex-NFL LB Taylor arrested for DUI

Miscellany: The Florida Highway Patrol says ex-NFL player Lawrence Taylor has been arrested in Palm Beach County, Florida on a DUI charge, the Palm Beach Post reports.

Spokesman Sgt. Mark Wysocky tells the newspaper that Taylor was arrested after a crash on Florida’s Turnpike.

Taylor, 57, was driving south on the turnpike from Beeline Highway about 5:20 p.m. when he became involved in a crash. Taylor switched lanes and hit a motor home and sideswiped a patrol vehicle. Taylor was taken to the Palm Beach County Jail.

Simpson wins record fifth 5th Avenue Mile: American Olympian Jenny Simpson became the first five-time winner in New Balance 5th Avenue Mile history, winning in 4 minutes, 18.3 seconds in New York.

The bronze medalist in Rio in the 1,500 meters, Simpson won for the fourth straight year. She had the third fastest-women’s time in the 36-year history of the event.
