Newsmakers: Christiano Ronaldo to play 1st match since injury at Euro 2016

Returned Soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo will play in his first match of the season on Saturday after recovering from the left knee injury he picked up in the European Championship final. Real Madrid hosts Osasuna in the Spanish league. Ronaldo has been sidelined since injuring his left knee in a collision with France forward Dimitri Payet during the Euro 2016 final on July 10. Portugal won, beating France 1-0 in extra time.

Announced Alabama has doubled offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin’s salary for this season. The university trustees’ compensation committee approved Kiffin’s new $1.4 million deal on Friday. It runs from July 1, 2016 to Feb. 28, 2017.

Reported Prosecutors continue building their case in alleging Buffalo Sabres forward Evander Kane was trespassing the night he is accused of harassing three women at a downtown Buffalo bar in June. Erie County assistant district attorney Lynette Reda submitted a deposition from a Buffalo police officer stating the bar had security staffing its entrance and exit the night Kane was arrested. In handing over the deposition to Judge Barbara Johnson-Lee, Reda said it supported the evidence of trespassing.

Arrested The Cavaliers say guard Iman Shumpert was arrested last month on suspicion for driving under the influence. Shumpert was arrested on Aug. 10 in Fayette County, Georgia, following a traffic stop for a lane violation. An incident report obtained by Cleveland.com says a deputy smelled an odor consistent with burned marijuana in Shumpert’s vehicle, and the player admitted to smoking. The report says Shumpert struggled with a field sobriety test and declined a blood test.

Departed Baylor coach Jim Grobe says running back Johnny Jefferson will not play this season as he takes time away from school to recuperate from injuries and deal with personal issues.Johnson has been dealing with injuries to his foot and ribs and did not play in Baylor’s opening victory. Grobe said Jefferson is still a member of the team and he hopes the junior returns to school next semester.

Jefferson ran for 1,000 yards last season, including 299 in a bowl victory against North Carolina, and figured to be the No. 2 tailback behind Shock Linwood.

No. 23 Baylor faces SMU on Saturday.

Injured Second-year shooting guard Josh Richardson may miss the start of the season for the Miami Heat after he partially tore the medial collateral ligament in his right knee during an offseason workout. A person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that Richardson is expected to miss the start of training camp this month and possibly a few more weeks from there.
