Area roundup: WSU volleyball extends streak against Virginia, then falls to tourney host Baylor

Kyra Holt had 11 kills to help Washington State sweep Virginia in the Baylor Invitational in Waco, Texas, on Saturday.

WSU tallied its sixth consecutive sweep and ninth consecutive victory, with set scores of 25-10, 25-15 and 25-16 in the victory over the Cavaliers (3-8).

McKenna Woodford had 10 kills, and added four digs and two blocks. Taylor Mims, Casey Schoenlein and Hailey Bethune each had six kills with Mims leading the match with six blocks. Claire Martin had five blocks and Schoenlein added four blocks. Haley MacDonald and Nicole Rigoni combined for 33 assists while Alexis Dirige led the match with 14 digs.

The Cougars (10-2) had those strings snapped in the nightcap, falling to tournament host Baylor 25-23, 21-25, 25-21, 22-15, 15-9.

WSU travels to Washington for its Pac-opener on Wednesday.

Zags get past Bobcats: Gonzaga swept past Montana State 25-12, 25-14, 25-20, wrapping up the Ameritas Players Challenge in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Paige Folger was named to the All-Tournament team. Against Montana State, she tied her career high with 13 kills. In all three matches this weekend, Folger had 26 kills and blocked eight attacks. This is Gonzaga’s third consecutive season with a winning mark against non-conference foes.

Gonzaga (7-3) begins its West Coast Conference slate on Thursday at Saint Mary’s.

Pirates escape Pacific: Emiko Kahler had a career-high 12 kills to lead Whitworth over visiting Pacific (Oregon) 25-21, 17-25, 25-12, 26-24 in a Northwest Conference match.

Whitworth (7-3, 2-0) plays at Lewis-Clark State on Tuesday.

Cardinals lose in straight sets: North Idaho (5-4, 2-1 NWAC) fell to host Walla Walla CC 25-23, 25-21, 25-12. The Cardinals play host to Blue Mountain on Monday.

Women’s soccer

Emily Aspden scored twice and North Idaho cruised past Blue Mountain 9-1 in the rain in a Northwest Athletic Conference matchup in Coeur d’Alene.

Monique Queen added a goal and two assists while Meg Lowery had a goal and an assist as the Cardinals outshot BMCC 25-4. North Idaho (5-1, 3-0) travels to Yakima Valley on Saturday.

Lutes edge Pirates: Machaela Graddy scored in the 84th minute and league favorite Pacific Lutheran edged Whitworth 1-0 in Tacoma. Whitworth (1-4, 0-1) faces Puget Sound on Sunday at noon.

Sasquatch beat Walla Walla: Jenna Sullens scored twice and CC Spokane topped visiting Walla Walla 4-0 at SFCC. Stephanie Overland and Sydney Weiler also scored for the Sasquatch. Spokane (7-0-3, 3-0-0) plays at Blue Mountain on Wednesday.

Men’s soccer

Moi Diaz and Rylan Berriman scored second-half goals and Whitworth came from behind to beat visiting Willamette 2-1 in a Northwest Conference opener.

Willamette led 1-0 heading into halftime. Diaz tied it in the 74th minute and Berriman notched the winner in the 87th minute off help from Alfredo Ornelas.

Whitworth (3-2, 1-0) plays host to Linfield on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Cardinals fall at home: North Idaho dropped a 3-1 decision at home to Wenatchee Valley.

Max Mularski scored in the 15th minute for NIC (1-4-2, 1-2), which plays host to CC Spokane on Wednesday.

Squatch shut out Walla Walla: Jonathan Cortez scored twice to pace CC Spokane (2-3-2, 2-1-0) over Walla Walla 5-0 at SFCC.

Cross Country

Michael Williams’ runner-up finish for the second straight year led the Washington State men to its third consecutive team title at the 25th annual Sundodger Invitational at Lincoln Park in Seattle.

Williams ran the men’s 8,000m course in 23 minutes 41.4 seconds, behind Washington’s Colby Gilbert’s 23:38.7.

It was also the second year the Cougars women’s team was runner-up.

WSU’s Devon Bortfeld finished 12th in the women’s 6,000m race in a time of 21:11.2.

Whitworth’s women took seventh and the men finished 21st. Kayla Leland was 10th overall.

Vandals, Zags split dual meet: The Idaho women handled Gonzaga in a dual meet in Spokane. Gonzaga’s men narrowly defeated the Vandals.

Jordan Thurston of Gonzaga took home the women’s individual win, but the Vandals claimed the next five spots for the team win. Idaho’s Kara Story finished second in 17:39.3.

Troy Fraley of Gonzaga, who was running unattached, won the men’s race at 24:24.9. Gonzaga’s Max Kaderabek and Scott Kopczynski finished second and third.

Junior hockey

Chiefs top Americans: Curtis Miske scored 1:11 into overtime and the Spokane Chiefs edged the Tri-City Americans 3-2 in WHL preseason action at the Spokane Arena. Dominic Zwerger and Kailer Yamamoto also scored for the Chiefs.

Nitehawks drop Braves: The Beaver Valley Nitehawks beat the Spokane Braves 5-3 in KIJHL play at Eagles Ice-A-Rena. Elliott Ploude, Mason Jones and Paxton Malone had the Braves goals.
