Area softball: UCLA edges Washington

Paige Holland tallied three hits and three RBIs and UCLA beat Washington in Seattle on Saturday.

The Bruins (26-8, 2-3 Pacific-12) got off to a fast start, but had to hold off a rally from the Huskies (26-8, 3-5).

Kylee Perez added two hits and two runs for UCLA, which clinched the series. Taylor Van Zee led UW with two hits and four RBIs.

Whitworth 9-7, Puget Sound 2-4: pushed its winning streak to nine games as it swept Puget Sound 9-7, 2-4 in a doubleheader on Saturday.

Shannon Wessel homered and drove in two runs as the Pirates (25-5, 16-2 Northwest Conference) took the first game from the Loggers (11-16, 4-12). Michelle Silva also batted in a pair to support Madi Perez (15-1), who went the distance and didn’t allow an earned run.

Myranda Ramirez went 3 for 4 and plated six runs in the second game. Ramirez had a three-run double in the second and a three-run homer in the fourth. Ashley Trueblood (7-1) worked 4 1/3 innings.

Walla Walla 6-7, North Idaho 3-9: The Cardinals (12-5, 6-3 NWAC) battled back to earn a split against the Warriors (12-8, 7-5) in Coeur d’Alene.
