Area roundup: Washington State women’s soccer edges Saint Mary’s

Maddy Haro scored on a penalty kick in the 28th minute and Washington State (1-1-0) topped visiting Saint Mary’s (1-2-0) 1-0 with its second-straight shutout.

Goalie Ella Dederick, the reigning Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week, faced just one shot on goal in nine attempts.

Idaho 1, Boise State 1, OT: Kelly Dopke scored in the 90th minute to even the score and the Vandals (1-1-1) earned a draw after overtime with the Broncos (1-1-1) in the Kibbie Dome, as Idaho started its home schedule to become the first NCAA women’s program to play a full-season indoors.

San Jose State 3, Eastern Washington 0: Jamilecxth Beccera scored two goals and the Spartans (1-2-0) topped the Eagles (2-1-0) in the Montana Cup in Missoula. Chloe Williams led Eastern in shots for the third game in a row with five, two on goal. It’s the first time the Eagles have been shut out in 13 games.

Peninsula 4, CC Spokane 3: Sabrina Castaneda’s goal in the 60th minute made it a one-goal game but the Sasquatch (0-2) couldn’t find the equalizer against the Pirates (2-0) in a Northwest Conference friendly in Tukwila, Washington. Jamie Fassler and Peyton Vasquez scored for CCS.

North Idaho 3, Everett 2: Linnea Pretzer had a goal with a pair of assists and the Cardinals (1-1) edged the Trojans (0-2) in a NWAC friendly in Tukwila. Pretzer’s 84th minute goal came directly on a corner kick. Aunika Capps and Erica Powell added also scored for NIC.

Whitworth ranked third in NWC: The Pirates received one first place vote and placed third in the Northwest Conference preseason coaches poll. Pacific Lutheran, which finished 2016 undefeated in conference play, was first overall.

Men

Gonzaga vs. Houston Baptist, ppd: The Bulldogs season opener against host Houston Baptist in the Houston Baptist Invitational in Houston was canceled, along with the rest of the tourney, due to Hurricane Harvey. Gonzaga will play Bradley – another school that was scheduled to play in the tournament – in Peoria, Illinois, on Sunday at 11 a.m.

CC Spokane 3, Peninsula 1: Arturo Bahena scored a tie-breaking goal in the 70th minute and the Sasquatch (1-0-1) topped the Pirates (1-1-0) in a Northwest Conference friendly in Tukwila, Washington. Ian Schimandle added insurance in the 75th minute and Jesus Meraz-Rodriguez started the scoring in the 15th minute.

Pierce 4, North Idaho 1: Four players scored for the Raiders (1-1) in a walk over the Cardinals (0-2) in an NWAC friendly in Tukwila. Shane Gillette tallied for NIC in the 69th minute.

Volleyball

Illinois 3, Gonzaga 0: Jacqueline Quade had 10 kills, Jordyn Poulter had 35 assists and the Illini (1-0) beat the Bulldogs (0-1) in the Montana State Bobcat Classic (25-15, 25-16, 25-12) in Bozeman.

Air Force 3, Gonzaga 1: Denise Ssozi had 16 kills with 10 digs and the Falcons (1-0) handled the Bulldogs (0-2) in their second game of the tournament. Kaylie Loewen matched a career-high with 12 kills and Alyse Whitaker added 11 for the Zags.

UC Davis 3, Eastern Washington 1: Ashley Seiler collected her ninth career double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs but the Eagles (0-1) fell to the Aggies (22-25, 25-20, 25-14, 25-11) in their first match UNLV Tournament in Las Vegas.

Eastern Washington 3, Binghamton 2: Seiler had 29 kills with 18 digs and the Eagles (1-1) topped the Bearcats (0-2) in their second game of the day (19-25, 25-21, 22-25, 31-29, 16-14). Regan Harr added 26 assists.

Oregon State 3, Idaho 0: Mary-Kate Marshall had 14 kills and 12 digs to pace the host Beavers over the Vandals (0-1) in the first match of the Oregon State Tournament (25-17, 25-18, 25-10) in Corvallis. Haylee Mathis recorded her 10th career double-double for Idaho with 12 digs and 28 assists.
