Area roundup: Gonzaga volleyball edged by Montana State

Kaylie Loewen had a career-high 20 kills and Jenna Kuehn added 29 assists, but Gonzaga (0-3) was edged by Montana State (1-2) in a five-set decision (21-25, 25-17, 25-19, 24-26, 15-9) in the Montana State Bobcat Classic in Bozeman on Saturday.

The Zags rallied for the final two points in the fourth game, both on kills by Loewen, to force the deciding fifth game.

Faith Smith chipped in with 23 assists while Chapin Gray and Tiyana Hallums both finished with double-digit kills, with 11 and 10, respectively – both career highs.

UNLV 3, Eastern Washington 1: Ashley Seiler had 16 kills and two service aces, but the Eagles (1-2) fell to the Rebels (2-1) in the UNLV Tournament in Las Vegas (18-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-12).

Seiler was named to the all-tournament team, recording 57 kills and 34 digs over the two days.

UNLV claimed second place in the two-day tournament while Eastern settled for third place.

Kansas State 3, Idaho 0: Sarah Sharp led all players with 14 kills, but the Vandals (0-3) were swept by the Wildcats (2-0) in the Oregon State Tournament in Corvallis (25-23, 25-18, 25-15).

University of the Pacific 3, Idaho 0: Sharp added seven more kills in the Vandals’ (0-3) loss to the Tigers (1-2) in their second game of the day. Sharp totaled 31 kills over the two-day event and was named to the all-tournament team.

NWAC friendlies: CC Spokane won all four of its matches at the Northwest Athletic Conference friendly tournament in Tukwila, Washington.

The Sasquatch beat Edmonds 2-1 (21-25, 25-18, 15-13), Chemeketa 2-1 (25-22, 23-25, 15-11), Tacoma 2-0 (25-12, 25-11) and Umpqua 2-1 (25-20, 22-25, 15-6).

North Idaho split four matches. The Cardinals beat Bellevue 2-1 (23-25, 25-15, 17-15) and Linn-Benton 2-0 (26-24, 25-19), while falling to Clark 2-0 (25-23, 25-22) and Lower Columbia 2-1 (25-22, 25-21).
