Area roundup: Gonzaga men defeat Bradley in double overtime

Austin Giftopoulos netted the winning goal during a goal-mouth scramble in the 107th minute, and Gonzaga edged Bradley 2-1 in double overtime Sunday in Peoria, Illinois.

Christo Michaelson gave the Bulldogs (1-0) an early lead on a header in the 28th minute, but the Braves (0-1) equalized when Roman Schindler scored on a header of his own in the 88th.

GU outshot Bradley 13-4 and Bulldogs keeper Ben Willis didn’t have to make any saves.

The game was played on short notice, as Gonzaga’s scheduled weekend games against Houston Baptist and Texas Rio Grande Valley were canceled due to Hurricane Harvey.

Highline 2, CC Spokane 1: Ryley Johnson scored in the 87th minute to give the Thunderbirds (3-0) a 2-1 win over the Sasquatch in an NWAC friendly in Tukwila, Washington.

Mohamed Jeylani also scored for Highline, while Hector Magana scored for CCS (1-1-1).

Women’s soccer

Hannah Diaz recorded the only goal in the 37th minute, and St. Mary’s stopped Idaho’s home winning streak with a 1-0 win.

The Vandals (1-2-1) hadn’t lost at home since October 17, 2014.

Sarah Sawatsky preserved the shutout with seven saves for the Gaels (2-2).

Air Force 3, Eastern Washington 1: Kaitlyn Cook tallied a goal and an assist as the Falcons topped the Eagles at the Montana Cup in Missoula.

Kristen Shimkus and Erin Speer also scored for Air Force (1-3). Alexis Stephenson notched the lone goal for EWU (2-2).

Santa Clara 2, Washington State 1: Myah Baksh scored the winner as the Broncos rallied to knock off the visiting Cougars.

Grace Hancock put WSU (1-1-1) in front in the 41st minute, but Santa Clara (2-2) turned it around in the second half behind goals from Kellie Peay and Baksh.

Gonzaga 2, Portland State 1: Madeline Gotta and Callie Best scored early in the second half, and the Bulldogs held off the Vikings in Hillsboro, Oregon.

Gonzaga (3-0-1) matched its best start in program history.

Kasey Isobe scored a late goal to get PSU (1-2) back in it.

Volleyball

Ella Lajos tallied 10 kills and five blocks, and Washington State earned a 27-25, 25-22, 14-25, 28-26 win over American in Washington.

Ashley Brown added 19 assists and Alexis Dirige totaled 16 digs for the Cougars (1-0). Aleksandra Kazala had 18 kills and 11 digs for the Patriots (1-3).

NWAC friendlies: North Idaho won a pair of matches at the Northwest Athletic Conference friendlies in Eugene, beating Shoreline 25-21, 25-19, and topping Highline 22-25, 25-13, 25-17, 25-8.

CC Spokane split its two matches, defeating Skagit Valley 25-13, 25-22, and losing to Pierce 13-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-20.
