Northern Idaho man dies about 12 hours after entering jail

GRANGEVILLE, Idaho – Officials are investigating after a 21-year-old northern Idaho man died about 12 hours after being booked into the Idaho County Jail.

The Idaho County Sheriff’s office said Justin R. Ross of Cottonwood died Thursday night.

Officials said Ross was arrested Thursday on a warrant involving trespassing while hunting and booked into the jail at about 9:45 a.m.

Officials said Ross was having trouble with this balance and speech, and was placed in a maximum-security cell to be checked every 15 minutes.

The sheriff’s office said that jail staff noticed Ross wasn’t breathing at about 10:30 p.m. and began life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead a hospital in Grangeville.

The Kamiah Marshal’s Office is conducting the investigation, and an autopsy was planned.
