Whitworth sweeps baseball doubleheader from Pomona-Pitzer
Matthew Nelson hit a three-run homer to provide what proved to be the winning runs in the opener and Whitworth scored three unearned runs in the ninth inning of the second game to sweep a doubleheader on Sunday from Pomona-Pitzer, 10-6 and 7-6, in Claremont, California.
The victories completed a three-game sweep of the Sagehens (4-5).
Nelson’s homer in the fifth inning gave the Pirates (5-1) a 8-3 lead. Nelson had two hits and drove in four runs. Liam Patrick slugged a two-run homer and had three RBIs and Daniel Casanova and Joel Condreay had two hits each. Starter Ryan Kingma (2-0) went five innings, giving up five hits, two walks and three runs while striking out four.
Nicholas Nerud and Daniel Casanova drove in runs in the three-run ninth of the second game.
Nelson also hit a solo home run in the second game and picked up two more hits with Ryan Bird collecting three hits and Nate Lamberty two RBIs. Taylor Hillmick (1-0) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for the win.
