BRIEF: Yakima Valley Trolleys opening Selah line Saturday

YAKIMA, Wash. – For the first time in two years, Yakima’ historic trolleys will be making the run to Selah starting Saturday.

Yakima Valley Trolleys has reopened the Selah line, clearing a series of rock slides that had covered the tracks. Volunteers also repaired sections of track damaged in the slides and cleared out dead vegetation along the right of way, which crosses a steep cliff beside the Yakima River.

The trolleys’ operators are in the process of replacing the electric wire that powered Selah-bound trolleys. That wire had been stolen by thieves, and the plan is to connect the new one to an alarm system to alert police, according to a news release from Yakima Valley Trolleys.

Until it is replaced, a generator car will provide the 600 volts of direct current to power the trolley.

Trolleys operate Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, with Selah runs leaving the trolley barn at South Third Avenue and Pine Street at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. Fares are $10 for adults, $6 for children and senior citizens.
