Texas True Barbecue has opened in downtown Spokane, Sushi Sakai will open in early April

There’s a new barbecue joint in downtown Spokane.

All meats – brisket, pork ribs, chicken, sausage – are smoked in-house at Texas True Barbecue, which opened at the end of January at 122 S. Monroe St. in the space that used to house Brooklyn Deli.

So is the mac-and-cheese, which comes with peas and, on weekends, peas and ham.

Plates come with a choice of smoked meat, bread or corn bread, a side and a beverage for $11. Sides are roasted potatoes, Texas-style beans, coleslaw, red beans and rice, salad, or that smoked mac-and-cheese. Friday and Saturday, jambalaya is also available as a side. Sides are $2.50.

Plates with two meats, two sides, bread or corn bread and a beverage are $17.50. Also on the menu: a $5 chopped brisket sandwich or four sandwiches for $17.50.

Mesquite wood chips are used for smoking the brisket. Apple and cherry wood is used for everything else.

“The top-seller so far has got to be our brisket. Our mac-and-cheese is our best-selling side,” said general manager Tanya Fonda.

Pete Grundhauser, who used to live in Texas, is the owner.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday. The restaurant is closed Sunday, but available for rental for private parties.

There’s seating for 35. Catering is available. So is delivery. And active members of the military as well as first responders receive a 10 percent discount.

Sushi Sakai will open soon

The third Sushi Sakai will open in early April in the Lincoln Plaza Building space that last housed a MacKenzie River Pizza.

The family-run restaurant at 818 W. Riverside Ave. will feature both Japansese and Korean food, chef Jin Jeon said. His father, Jae Jeon, is the owner and head chef. They hope to appeal to downtown office and retail workers.

Sushi Sakai will be open daily, 11 a.m. to late night, and have takeout and a whiskey bar. Other locations are on Sprague Avenue in Spokane Valley and Boone Avenue near Gonzaga University.
