Man arrested after locking himself inside train locomotive, blowing whistle

Police arrested a man early Saturday who locked himself inside a running locomotive and blew the whistle repeatedly as he refused to come out.

Officers were called to the area of Helena Street south of Front Avenue around 8:30 a.m. Saturday. The man, identified as 40-year-old Jeremy J. Warfield, was not cooperative and refused to exit the engine, according to the Spokane Police Department.

The engine was running, but Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway employees disabled it so the man couldn’t drive off, police said. After attempting to talk to Warfield for an hour officers sprayed pepper spray into the cab through an open window, according to police. Warfield gave up a few minutes later.

He is facing a charge of second-degree trespassing. He was booked into the Spokane County Jail after being treated for pepper spray exposure. Warfield has a criminal history in Spokane and may have been under the influence of drugs, police said.
