College roundup: San Diego hands Gonzaga first conference loss of volleyball season

Jayden Kennedy had a match-best 15 kills on Thursday and 18th-ranked San Diego (13-4, 6-1) handed Gonzaga its first West Coast Conference volleyball defeat of the season, 25-18, 25-20, 25-21.

Alyse Whitaker and Payton Mack combined for 22 kills for the Bulldogs (11-8, 6-1), who had won seven consecutive matches.

GU will travel to seventh-ranked BYU (18-1, 7-0) on Saturday, attempting to tie for first place.

  • Abby Garrity finished with 14 kills, and Ashlyn Van Every added 38 assists and 15 digs as visiting Idaho State (7-13, 4-3 Big Sky) posted a 25-14, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21 win over Eastern Washington (6-10, 3-4) in Cheney. Ashley Seiler led EWU with a match-high 18 kills and two aces. Jayde Robertsen added 10 kills and four blocks.
  • Kaela Straw and Sarah Sharp combined for 30 kills to guide Idaho (11-7, 6-1 Big Sky) to a 25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 25-14 win over visiting Weber State (4-15, 2-5) in Moscow. The Vandals’ Haylee Mathis added 49 assists and two aces. The North Division-leading Vandals are on a four-match winning streak.

Men’s soccer

Drew Skundrich’s goal in the 54th minute allowed eighth-ranked Stanford (9-2-1, 3-0-1 Pac-12) to forge a 1-all tie with No. 19 Washington (9-3-1, 2-1-1) in Stanford, California.

UW’s Elijan Rice headed in a rebound goal in the 21st minute. Stanford outshot the Huskies 5-1 during the two overtimes.
