After Willie Nelson says he’ll perform for Beto O’Rourke, some mad fans say ‘Now git!’
The party’s over for some Willie Nelson fans.
After the Texas music icon announced that he’ll headline a Sept. 29 Austin, Texas, rally for Democrat Beto O’Rourke – who is challenging Republican Ted Cruz for a seat in the U.S. Senate – fans began speaking out about the 85-year-old musician.
Some were quick to throw their support behind Nelson, who said O’Rourke “embodies what is special about Texas.”
Others wanted the Red-Headed Stranger to know they’ve had enough.
“Goodbye Willie,” David R. Williams wrote on Facebook. “I don’t support socialist commies! You’re not going to advertise on my FB page either.
“Like we say in Texas, Now Git.”
This fierce battle in Texas for the U.S. Senate has become one of the costliest – and most watched – races across the country as many wonder if O’Rourke can manage to do what no other Democrat has done for more than two decades in the Lone Star State: win a statewide office.
The fight for this Senate seat, represented by Republicans since 1993, is dominating headlines and TV commercials.
Recent polls have shown this race is getting tighter, essentially being right now in a dead heat.
Most recently, the star power ramped up in this race after President Donald Trump announced he would hold a rally for Cruz at the ”biggest stadium in Texas“ he could find this month.
But one tweeter said Willie beats Trump.
”Here you go TrumpCruzalooza, get the biggest stadium you can find, it won’t matter,“ Muckmaker tweeted. ”Willie Nelson has agreed to do a rally for Beto O’Rourke. The end of September event will be the first time Willie has directly performed on behalf of a political candidate. Willie is Texas folks!“
Critics
Some Willie Nelson fans weren’t shy about their plans to give up on the legendary country singer because of his own political beliefs.
“Someone buy my Willie Nelson ticket for Friday, Nov. 16,“ Dakota Boll tweeted. ”I am no longer willing to watch that hippie guitarist who supports that damn socialist running for Senate.“
Claudia Kirby Heathington also weighed in.
“Open your eyes Willie! Beto is a Socialist who probably has lied to you. This is a real shame that you support him. Won’t set well with Conservative Texans. We cannot let this man in our Senate. Hope you check him out more deeply and change your mind.”
”That smoke has finally got you,“ Ralph Brown added on Facebook.
Supporters
The beloved musician known as much for his affinity for marijuana as for songs such as “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys” wasn’t hung out to dry by all his fans, though.
“Willie Nelson is royalty in Texas,“ film producer Adam Best tweeted. “Him headlining a rally for Beto O’Rourke is a much bigger deal than your celebrity endorsement.”
Country singer and songwriter Wheeler Walker Jr. also spoke out in support of the longtime Texas legend.
“Not sure what went wrong in your life that would make you insult Willie Nelson,” he tweeted. “You can argue politics all you want but you cannot argue Willie.”
