Man arrested under suspicion of firing rifle into air at north Spokane County mobile home park

A 51-year-old man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of firing a rifle into the air at a north Spokane County mobile home park.

Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the area of 40600 N. Newport Highway at about 10:30 a.m. on reports of an intoxicated man firing a rifle or shotgun outside of his home, which was next to another mobile home, according to a news release.

The man, identified by deputies as Job A. Gustafson, was reportedly “confused and didn’t know why he was being contacted,” the release said. He was taken into custody without incident. Deputies recovered a .30-30 rifle and found one spent casing and three unfired rounds in the rifle.

Gustafson faces one charge of misdemeanor reckless endangerment.

Deputies were unable to find anyone who had been shot or injured.

While responding to the call, Deputy Julian Covella’s patrol car was hit at the intersection of U.S. Highway 2 and Farwell Road. His lights and siren were on at the time. He was uninjured.
