Police arrest man accused of drive-by shooting in downtown Spokane

Police arrested a man early Friday morning accused of a drive-by shooting.

Gillis F. Jackson, 52, was taken into custody on U.S. Highway 2 at South Russell Road near Sunset Highway after witnesses told officers Jackson was involved in argument with a woman near Pacific Avenue and Browne Street downtown, where he fired a weapon, police said in a news release.

Officers who were nearby at the time of the shooting apparently heard the gunfire and saw a vehicle leaving the area immediately after. Police don’t believe the woman was injured, however they haven’t been able to locate her.

Shortly after his arrest, officers found a handgun, a spent casing and drugs in Jackson’s vehicle.

Officers ask that the woman involved contact the Spokane Police Department or Crime Check at (509) 456-2233. Police believe she may have been the victim of first-degree assault.

Jackson, who has felony convictions in Washington and other states, faces charges of drive-by shooting, unlawful possession of a firearm, and three counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.
