Pullman grad Hawa Mahama shines at U-20 Pan-Am Games
Pullman graduate Hawa (Mayyi) Mahama, an upcoming sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania, took the silver medal in the women’s hammer throw on Sunday afternoon at the Under-20 Pan-American Games in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Mahama finished second with a throw of 202 feet, 1 inch. Her best throw in the event while competing for the Pullman Greyhounds was 174-1. She increased her personal record to 204-2 during her freshman season with the Quakers in the Ivy League.
Mahama’s PR in the hammer throw came during the NCAA Division I East Region Preliminary rounds where she placed eighth.
Mahama won the women’s hammer throw with a fourth-round effort of 215-5 at the USATF U-20 Outdoor Championships at Ansin Sports Complex in Miramar, Florida.
Mahama improved to the No. 3 all-time American U-20 performer and No. 6 among World U-20 athletes this year. She also produced the top throw by a collegiate freshman this season and the No. 2 effort all-time in Ivy League history.
