Area roundup: Nick Trogrlic-Iverson’s strong outing leads Gonzaga baseball past Loyola Marymount

Nick Trogrlic-Iverson pitched seven shutout innings and Nick Nyquist hit a solo homer Friday to lead Gonzaga to a 1-0 win over Loyola Marymount to open a three-game West Coast Conference baseball series at Page Stadium in Los Angeles.

Trogrlic-Iverson (4-2) allowed two hits, struck out seven and walked none, retiring the last 15 batters he faced. Alek Jacob pitched the final two innings, striking out three, to earn his 10th save.

Nyquist homered to left-center off Codie Paiva (6-5) in the seventh inning, his club-high 10th of the season.

The Zags (29-21, 17-8) trail first-place Brigham Young (18-8 WCC) by one-half game with the regular season winding down. BYU ends its WCC schedule Saturday at Santa Clara; Gonzaga and LMU meet Saturday and Sunday.

The Lions (28-22, 14-11) are in the running for one of four spots to the WCC Tournament, which begins Thursday in Stockton, California.

Softball

All Friday games at the Northwest Athletic Conference Championships at Merkel Complex were postponed to Saturday because of heavy rain. Opening-round games will begin at noon.
