Firefighters quickly knock down blaze threatening hotel, homes off Sunset Boulevard on Sunday

Firefighters dig a line to prevent future smoldering near charred grass at Sunset Boulevard and Rustle Street on Sunday, Aug. 23, 2020. The fire grew to about 1/3 of an acre before it was extinguished.   (Kip Hill)

A third of an acre burned quickly in the hills near Indian Canyon Golf Course on Sunday afternoon, but the flames were extinguished just as fast.

Crews from multiple firefighting agencies fought flames that were reported just before 4:30 p.m. near in the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Rustle Street. Police blocked roads in and out of the area as a precaution, and flames spreading in grass, shrubs and trees could have quickly spread to surrounding structures, said Guy Gifford, landowner assistance forester with the Department of Natural Resources.

“The potential was there early, because of the closeness of the homes, the apartments,” Gifford said.

The fire was quickly knocked down, and by 6 p.m. crews were digging lines to prevent further spread of flames. Gifford estimated between 20% and 40% containment at the time.

Firefighters credited surrounding home owners with planting green space to defend their property against encroaching flames.

Air resources and an inmate crew from Geiger Corrections Center were called to the fire, but dismissed after it was quickly doused. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

No structures burned in the fire, and no injuries were reported.
