Auntie’s hosts Mike Birbiglia and J. Hope Stein Zoom event on Saturday

Auntie’s Bookstore will host a live Zoom event Saturday with comedian Mike Birbiglia and poet J. Hope Stein to celebrate the release of their book “The New One: Painfully True Stories From a Reluctant Dad.” This event will mark the first stop on Birbiglia and Stein’s online book tour.

The exact structure of the event is meant to be a surprise, Auntie’s events coordinator Claire Davey said. But it might involve a group activity that allows viewers to turn on their cameras and participate actively in the Zoom meeting. “We’re really excited,” Davey said.

When Birbiglia asked his followers to tag their favorite indie bookstores in a recent Instagram post, several mentioned Auntie’s. Davey saw the post and reached out to discuss scheduling an event. Birbiglia quickly agreed.

Alternating between comedy and poetry, the married writing duo cover Birbiglia’s initial reluctance to start a family, Stein’s difficult pregnancy and juggling first-time parenthood with active careers.

“It’s a fascinating thing – writing with your wife – because it’s like going to couples therapy,” Birbiglia said in an interview with Stephen Colbert for “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.” “Except there’s no therapist.”

The book, he said, is like a “‘he said, she said,’ but it’s a ‘he said, she poetry.’ ”

Birbiglia is known for his appearances on “This American Life,” his movies “Sleepwalk With Me” and “Don’t Think Twice” and his standup specials “Thank God for Jokes,” “My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend” and most recently “The New One,” from which the new book was adapted.

Stein’s work has been published in the New York Times, the New Yorker and Poetry International. Poems from her debut collection, “Little Astronaut,” are featured in “The New One: Painfully True Stories From a Reluctant Dad” alongside other original works written for the new book.

To attend the Zoom event, purchase a copy of the book from Auntie’s online or reserve a copy for curbside pickup. For more information on the event, visit Auntie’s Facebook page.
