All Spokane Complex fires evacuation levels lifted in Spokane County

All remaining evacuation levels from the Spokane Complex fires were lifted Tuesday at 2 p.m., according to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.

Firefighting efforts will continue, as will recovery and mop-up operations in the areas, including damage assessment and utility work. Residents are advised to keep roadways clear for larger trucks and necessary equipment.

Residents returning to standing homes or rubble should be cautious that hazardous substances are present in and around the burn area.

Personal protective equipment is strongly recommended, and free kits are available at Shadle Park High School Disaster Assistance Center.

Once operations close at the high school, resources will be available online.

The Spokane Regional Health District authorized the Environmental Protection Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to begin hazardous household material assessment and cleanup efforts on fire -damaged properties.

“The goal of this order is to remove barriers to recovery, reduce health risks and help affected communities to move safely and efficiently to rebuilding,” said Spokane County Health Officer Dr. Francisco Velázquez.

Structures have not been assessed for stability and may be in danger of collapsing, depending on their condition.

If a building or structure is damaged, it should be inspected before entering.
