New management brings course up to par

When Kris Kallem took over as the general manager of Fairways Golf Course last year, the greens had spots of brown and sections of the fairway were stiff and sunburned. Kallem landed his first Fairways job picking up range balls back in high school and for the last 19 years has given his golf seasons at the West Plains course. But in recent years both he and Jerry Zink, who started in 1988 and is now director of golf, had become increasingly discouraged as the course deteriorated.

Old-school barbershop

Blaine Burrell, Chris Banka and Chris Griffith do not fit the stereotype of the traditional barber. All three are young and edgy-looking, with numerous tattoos. Indeed, the shop itself does not look traditional; vintage art adorns the walls and hip, contemporary music fills the space. But these three untraditional barbers are using their modern shop to embrace an old-fashioned style of barbering.

Paul Kuhlmann sculpts metal into life

Paul Kuhlmann plays with fire, welding metals into whatever his imagination can muster. Using copper-coated rods or pieces of scrap metal from places like the old Davenport Hotel, Kuhlmann creates wall hangings, garden art, free-standing pieces and artwork that suspend from above. “I have a makeshift library of pictures of things I’m interested in,” he said. “So, if someone wants a sculpture of say, a crocodile, I’ll probably have a photo of it that I could refer to.”

Plan boasts many options for play

CHENEY – Ball fields, a dog park and an aquatics center with both indoor and outdoor facilities have been included in a draft plan for Betz Park after a survey showed many residents favor an aquatics facility that may include a lap pool. Cheney park commissioners got their first look at the plan at their regular meeting last week, but, without a quorum, couldn’t make any decisions. Kerry Pease, Craig Witt and Vern Brock were the only commissioners in attendance.

Residents asked for input on zoning

AIRWAY HEIGHTS – Most residents probably wouldn’t want a factory built in their neighborhood. Nor would they likely want giant shopping centers with increased traffic using what should otherwise be sleepy residential streets where children play. But in Airway Heights, where single-family homes, apartments and big-box stores can sometimes be neighbors, city planners are trying to plan for future growth, including zoning for 376 acres just east of the city.

River District to be annexed by Liberty Lake sewer, water

The Liberty Lake Sewer and Water District is in the midst of annexing 402 acres encompassing what is known as the River District on the western edge of the city of Liberty Lake. The district is currently serving the area through an extension agreement. Annexing the area will remove a nominal monthly surcharge for customers and eliminate the risk that the area would be the first cut off if the district ever ran out of capacity. Since the district’s recently built sewage treatment plan has a 2 million gallon capacity, that option was unlikely.

Riverfront Park boasts King Cole Way

The driving force behind the creation of Expo ’74 is being recognized with the naming of a pathway in Riverfront Park, the site of Spokane’s famed world’s fair. King Cole, who led the effort to bring the world to Spokane, was the honored guest during a dedication of King Cole Way Friday at a footbridge adjacent to the floating stage where President Nixon opened the fair 34 years ago. The bridge had been dedicated as King Cole Bridge in 1994, and a sign declaring it as King Cole Way is being installed there, too.

Second chance for open mind?

I hate it when I’m wrong. Can’t stand all those “Geez, what was I thinking?” ruminations; I despise that feeling of stupidity. But, one has to step up to the plate some time.

Showcasing Rathdrum

It’s a rocky ride to start. A 19-mile bike ride – most of that on logging roads around the backside of Rathdrum Mountain – then a 4.5-mile kayak from upper Twin Lake to Lower Twin, followed by a 4.5-mile run back to Rathdrum.
