For the love of the goats

Heather Janke and her husband, Keith, have been raising goats in earnest at KnH Ranch outside of Cheney for about six years now. Before that time the animals were just pets. And before the goats' arrival, the Jankes were unaware of their quirky nature. "My sister took a job in Belgium, and she begged me to take these two little La Mancha goats that she had," says Janke. "I thought, 'Well, the kids could show them at the fair, that'll be fun.' Because I always did horses. Horses were my thing. But those two little goats just stole our hearts. They're very similar to dogs. They're very companion-oriented. So then it became serious after that."

Front porch: Visit to Skills Center is like memory lane

In my former life I was a radio personality. Way back in 1983 I had a weekly hour-long program. I spun Top-40 favorites such as "Eye of the Tiger" and "Centerfold" and did my best to emulate a breathy, sultry radio diva. Unfortunately, I ended up sounding like an asthmatic Madonna, or Cyndi Lauper with a really bad cold. What? You never heard my show? Well, I guess I'm not surprised, since you would have had to be in a one-mile radius of the Spokane Skills Center in north Spokane, to pick up station KSVC.

Honor veterans on Memorial Day

Since I lost my father, a U.S. Army Air Forces World War II veteran, in a car accident when I was 12, decorating his grave with flowers and attending the local Memorial Day programs with their fluttering flags and solemn words became something I looked forward to each year. The sound of taps fading into the air, the crash of a 21-gun salute and the military men and women standing at attention never failed to remind me of their sacrifice and my loss. Although Memorial Day traditionally is a day set aside to honor deceased veterans, as my family lost more members, we began to honor every family member who died, veteran or not. It just made sense to us.
