He used to have 19 vintage typewriters, but his wife persuaded him that the space they occupied could perhaps be better used otherwise. But he does love books, and his daughter Dana recently gave him a wonderful old dictionary as a gift, one she found in an antique store here in Spokane. It is the 1904 Common Sense Dictionary with Every Day Helps. KnowingI , too, would appreciate all this book represents, he kindly loaned it to me, and I have been gently turning the pages ever since.

Now that we are past Memorial Day, the gardening season has begun in earnest. Once all the vegetable seeds and transplants are set in the garden, it’s time to think about when and how to fertilize them so you get good production. Heavy feeders like corn, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers and eggplant need a lot more nutrients than light feeders like carrots, potatoes, onions, garlic and peppers. Crops like beans and peas and cover crops like field peas are in the legume family and fix nitrogen in the soil by the action of bacteria in their roots. This nitrogen is then available to the light and heavy feeders through crop rotation.
