‘Musketeers’ hits stage at children’s theater

It was a mad dash for young actors and actresses to jump into character for the first dress rehearsal of “The Three Musketeers.” The show opens Friday at Theater Arts for Children and follows the traditional storyline penned by Alexandre Dumas, of the obstacles that musketeer hopeful, D’Artagnan, has to overcome so he can join the royal Musketeers of the Guard.

When thieves stole copper wire out of empty buildings nearby, it all got to be too much for Julie Shepard-Hall. She owns ZipperZ, a consignment shop on Garland Avenue with her daughter and Shepard-Hall said she feels like there has been more crime in the neighborhood lately.

Some more snow likely, but not like in Northeast

Much of the snow in the lower elevations has melted across the Inland Northwest. Many are wondering if winter is coming to an end since the famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, did not see his shadow on Feb. 2. According to legend, if the groundhog does not see his shadow, then an early spring is right around the corner. However, residents in the Northeast are digging out from one of the biggest snowstorms in recorded history. This historic blizzard in New England caused several deaths and left at least 650,000 homes and businesses without electricity.

Greater Spokane County/Valley Meals on Wheels - Volunteers are needed to deliver hot meals to elderly and disabled people. Volunteers will also need to check on the well-being of each person on their route. Volunteers may choose to drive a route any day, Monday through Friday, or drive as a substitute on flexible days.

Barbershop quartets will sing for your sweetheart

The Spokane barbershop quartets are getting ready to deliver singing surprises to local sweethearts on Valentine’s Day. The quartets are all part of Pages of Harmony Men’s Chorus which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Every year, they take their show on the road for Valentine’s Day.

Basketball scorekeeper honored

Year after year, Bill Pierce has had a front row seat for Central Valley High School’s basketball games. The 68-year-old has been the official scorekeeper for three decades, following the boys and girls teams through intense rivalries and state tournaments. Last month, the school inducted him into the Wall of Fame that also honors great players, coaches and teams.

Crews tackle variety of fires

A mix of fires kept crews from the Spokane Valley Fire Department busy the week of Jan. 31 to Feb. 6, including a doghouse fire and an attic fire that was probably caused by a wood stove. The attic fire in the 900 block of North Vista Road was reported just after 4 p.m. Feb. 2. Four residents were able to get out of the home without injury. Crews found fire in the attic and the garage when they arrived.

Emphasis patrols net crooks

The Spokane Valley Police Department targeted vehicle prowls and garage burglaries, netting 20 arrests. After the success of the emphasis patrol from mid-November to mid-December, the department is working to find a better way to work intelligence about crime patterns into its everyday workload, said property crimes Sgt. John Nowels.

Pen pals are the window to another country for Spokane Valley fourth-graders who are learning what life is like for children their age in the West African country of Ghana. The third delivery of handwritten letters arrived from the Future Academy this week, each one addressed to one of Judy Rasmussen’s students at Adams Elementary.

In brief: Fire training Tuesday will involve donated home

MILLWOOD – The Spokane Valley Fire Department will use a home at 9621 E. Empire Ave. in Millwood for training Tuesday. Between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., smoke and flames will at times be visible from the home, which was donated to the department for training purposes. Empire Avenue will be closed between Woodruff Road and Boeing Road while the training is under way, but nearby homeowners will be allowed in and out. Traffic will be rerouted north on Woodruff Road to Dalton Avenue.

Lodging tax funds allotted

The Liberty Lake City Council gave seven local organizations a total of $70,000 in lodging tax funds. The organizations applied for the funds in November. The funds are collected from taxes added on to hotel stays and are to be used to boost tourism in the city. The largest award – $25,000 – went to the HUB Sports Center.
